All kidding aside, it IS fantastic how Radio Shack survives. It's like the shark, prehistoric and still kicking.

I was just thinking about this today as I walked past one. They really don't have ANYTHING that stands out as a "product". However if you need a $ .16 cent resistor...well I can't think of a better place to get one... if they have it.

We'll know that shakrs are really in trouble when they want to sell you a cell plan and need your zip code to sell you batteries.

Best line in the article

"I know one thing," Day continued. "If Sony and JVC start including gold-tipped cable cords with their products, we're screwed."

At least they stopped asking for my phone number when I want to buy batteries.... with cash...

I think they made a joke on Seinfeld to that effect.

I go to RS about twice a year - for an audio cable or a splitter or something. But if I have any lead time, I get it on the internets.

Or, if you need a 99¢ ethernet cable, they'll be sure to charge you $18.99 for it. RS sucks.

I used to love RS.
Still go there periodically just to see if they have anything at all worthwhile.

They have kind of started to try to position themselves as the go-to place for iPod accessories and cell phone stuff.

But that onion headline is spot on.
I always wonder that, especially since there are more RS store per sq. mile around here than Starbucks.

for $1.99 each, blister packed.

They must have figured out step 2.

1. Steal underpants
2.
3. Profit.

(is it just me, or does the underpants gnome with the glasses look like George Lucas?)

Not that I'm a huge RadioShack booster, but fair is fair. Their cables are WAY cheaper than the CompUSA equivalent.

And if you had the time to get a $.99 cable online- which is pretty much the only place you'll find one unless you have a real good all-purpose mom & pop computer patrs store near you (like Computer Direct in San Francisco), you wouldn't bi in a RadioShack.
