Huge deposit of lithium found…in the US

Had not heard about this:

In the race to hoard lithium, a metal crucial for creating the batteries that power electric vehicles, the US may have fortuitously stumbled on the world's biggest deposit yet.

A new study, published in the journal Science Advances, estimates that the McDermitt Caldera, a volcanic crater on the Nevada-Oregon border, harbors a colossal 20 to 40 million metric tons of lithium.

Based on these newest figures, the caldera dwarfs the amount of lithium in even Bolivia's salt flats, home to around 23 million tons.

Apparently, this deposit is uniquely rich in lithium, close to the surface, and in clay, which makes it easy to extract. The downsides are the usual for mining; environmental, and whose ground you have to dig up. But:

“It could change the dynamics of lithium globally, in terms of price, security of supply and geopolitics."

Interesting.

There were at least nine major lithium-brine deposits in the U.S. known about for several years. The huge issue will be keeping costs under control while mining it in an environmentally responsible manner. This is generally mutually exclusive for U.S. corporations, which is why we had been relying on lithium from other countries.

Direct Lithium Extraction makes brine extraction more feasible and cost effective. There are several companies working to bring DLE to commercial use. EnergyX actually did it in Chile briefly while testing their process. There are companies setting up shop around the Salton Sea working to extract lithium from there as well.

Disclosure:
I've been invested in EnergyX for several years now.

If this deposit is at the lower end of the estimate, say 20 million metric tons, does it still dwarf the 23 million deposit in Bolivia?

Might be factoring in the final yield based on the type of deposit, versus simple unprocessed tonnage. It says the crater lithium is in a favorable substrate.

Incredible de facto wilderness area that very few appreciate. Unfortunate we have to spoil the frick out of it in the name of environmental progress. I should have known we would do this.

Just took a look at that area on Google Earth.

It makes other areas of the high desert look lush by comparison.
