I shipped a car from South Florida to Portland Oregon. The shipper quoted $1400 and said 8-9 days, delivered within 10 miles of the destination address provided.

The shipper picks up the car on 9/10, one day late but not a big deal. Now 10 days later the shipper notifies me that due to an issue with one of the transfers (seems the car goes along on several different carriers/trucks) that the car won't be delivered until the 22nd or 23rd,

The family member expecting the car will have to use Uber or borrow friends cars, rent a car for a few days but I was not gong to argue with the shipper/broker that still has the car in his possession.

I have paid $700 so far and balance due upon safe delivery and inspection.

Contract states "shipper not responsible for delays caused by acts of nature or other issues beyond their control" Are the contracted trucker services in the shippers control?

Do Request compensation when delivered?

God must've fiddled with the transfer. $1400 is a lot of money to me. I don't what rights I signed away or how much of a cluster it would be to seek some compensation. 8-9 days turned into half a month. I'm like you and I wouldn't know what I would do.

Personally though I would have flown to you house and drove my car back to Oregon.

If you paid via credit card you might have some recourse, but first you'll probably need to "good faith" attempt to settle the matter with the vendor. If you get stonewalled then call 'em up.

Considering over 3200 miles, gas alone would be $700, plus wear and tear, tire wear etc. And taking up a week of someones time, $1400 seemed ok to me

The car is a 2019 BMW X5

If the car truly arrives on the 23rd and the car arrives with no issues or damage, the shipper is nice, apologizes etc I probably would not worry about it

I will agree that stuff happens. You're a good guy for getting your X5 to your family member.

I recently gave Mom's Subaru to a colleague of my sister at Fermilab. He took the Amtrak to Cleveland, I picked him up, we did the title transfer, he got his temp tags, insurance figured out, and he was on his way with a cold bag of ice water and granola bars. He got home in time for dinner. He did a donation to one of Mom's charities. Nice guy... high energy physicists are fun people.

Took two weeks to ship a vehicle from AZ to VA...the owner had previously driven that in three days.

There are a great many reasons a common carrier can be late. There is little recourse to the shipper or the consignee because to give recourse could result in a safety issue. I almost always gave daily progress reports and almost always called the consignee before leaving the shipper.

Maybe when I'm retired, I'll get a job driving cars across country for people. I've done the drive a few times. I like driving and if I can get paid to do it, that'd be great.

I suspect most cars are shipped nowadays because it is pretty cheap. But I suppose you can advertise your services and find someone willing to go that route.

You could definitely deliver RVs and make some cash doing that.
