Followup to my recent Dell 2408 WFP monitor failures conundrum

Original thread:[forums.macresource.com]

I replaced my 2 Dell 2408 monitors with 2 Viewsonic VP2456 ColorPro Pantone validated, 100% sRGB Delta E<2 monitors and almost have everything connected again. I ultimately decided on these 24" monitors after considering 2 or even 1 Viewsonic 27" ColorPros due to space concerns on my console bridge in relation to my seat and the distance to my speakers which sit next to the monitors.

I really like the VP2456 although I think Viewsonic has mediocre and vague documentation both included with the monitors and on their site in general, which also is clunky when viewed on Safari. For instance, Along with Pantone validation, and 100% sRGB, they claim 99% Adobe RGB gamut coverage throughout the line of ColorPro monitors, including these low cost VP2456 monitors. However there is no mention of Adobe RGB coverage anywhere in relation to the VP2456.

After searching through the website, googling and finding nothing I decided to try various presets included with the monitor, accessible through the OSD and also through an app if an upstream USB cable is connected. In going through the presets I selected their sRGB color setting. On confirming I got a screen notifying me that a new ICC profile would be written for sRGB, overwriting the Adobe RGB ICC profile. I had no idea that the monitor seemingly came set to Adobe RGB and there is no mention anywhere regarding it. It explained why all my photos that I viewed (with sRGB color profiles embedded in them) all looked over saturated before I changed the color setting to sRGB.

These monitors are really nice was far as connectivity goes, one reason why I picked them. They include USB-C, HDMI, USB and DisplayPort inputs. One negative with the monitors is how difficult it is to attach cables after the screen is attached to its stand.

One more issue I've had is the TruHu calibration app I recently bought and wrote about doesn't work with these monitors. After working with the company for several days and testing fixes they tried to come up with I finally asked for a refund, which they sent today, so I'm going to be purchasing a software/hardware calibration kit.

All in all I think these monitors are a nice replacement for my old Dell 2408s, considering the price was $199 each, if you are ok with a 24" 1920x 1080 IPS monitor.

Oh and one more weird thing: After letting the Dell 2408s sit out in the garage for about 4 days I tried turning them on again. One is now working perfectly fine again, one is blown. Go figure.

WOW... do you recall which one? I think you said one had backlight on but no image, the other seemed really dead. Maybe I should go back and read the first post to refresh my memory.

Yes, I know which one. #1 had a magenta vertical line on the far right side. That's the one that's still out. #2 had been fine and that's the one that is working well again. #1 is partially back, it now produces the information box as I switch inputs but inside the info box are jagged lines obscuring the text. I had read on a page where someone suggested letting them sit for several days after they go haywire. Apparently it worked for #2. I knew #1 had issues and the hard power disconnect probably finished the job on it.

Yeah, good stuff! I was actually just running Opcode's Studio Vision Pro on it. It's dual boot. I also have OS 10.4.11 on it. I can't believe how fast and snappy they both are on this G4. Wish I would have kept my other old Macs.

I assume those are 19" racks (Newt, please).

Did you buy it like this or is the desk custom made?

Yes, 19” racks. I had it custom made along with an audio console desk and cabinets in my old recording studio. It’s the only part I kept when I sold off the studio some years ago.

I see plenty of room for 27"s ;)

Realistically tho, at that distance, how high can you turn up those speakers before its deafening, like 1 or 2?

Lol, I really thought about it, actually they’re 2” wider than the space there, if they stayed where the 24” are. I’d need to move them back about 3”. Wasn’t sure if I’d be comfortable moving them back further with old eyes. Plus, it would have been double the price of the 24”. Can’t move the speakers further out sideways without moving my seating position further back which is the real deal killer.

I don’t work or mix loud, the room is very small so reflections are severe if you crank it up. I haven’t bothered to tune it, I’m using an acoustic room correction system which works well.

Thanks, I like keeping some of the old gear for nostalgia but I don’t use much of it now as the software today really is just as good, if not better. Wish the room was bigger. Wiring behind the console is tough. The space is so tight I sometimes get stuck back there if I’m not careful. smiley-laughing001
