Good news for the used EV market

A study done in March by Recurrent Motors Inc. — a Seattle-based battery analysis company — showed that overall, EV batteries are actually very reliable and long-lasting. In fact, they may last longer than the vehicles themselves.

The study took real-world data from 15,000 EVs of various makes and models in the U.S. By linking to the vehicles’ connectivity systems, the company took several battery readings daily, including charging activity, EV battery level, and estimated range.

The data showed that most EVs driven close to 100,000 miles still have at least 90 percent of their original range left.

Fear of a battery going bad has been cited by many for their reluctance to purchase a used EV.

I suspect there's a HUGE market for EV conversion of classic cars/chassis.
I wish I knew how to get into this as a business. But I think I'm not mechanical enough.

Outlast the car, eh, not sure about that...not without at least being able to service individual cells within battery. And entire battery does not go bad, it is made up of cells which have individual life spans. I replaced my Prius hybrid battery at 130,000 miles, 12 years old. The "new" battery is not new, it is reconditioned, compiled from known good cells from other used batteries.

I don't know the lower%, but if you don't charge a cell phone above 85%, each charge cycle is 1/5th the wear of a 100% charge, if that makes sense. I think Tesla acknowledges this somehow.

The problem is your 500 mile battery pack is realistically a 425 mile pack then, and a base model battery is only a few hundred miles range. At least right now.

Heller, 554 U.S. 570 (2008) Private citizens have the right under the Second Amendment to possess an ordinary type of weapon and use it for lawful, historically established situations such as self-defense in a home, even when there is no relationship to a local militia.

"The conclusion is thus inescapable that the history, concept, and wording of the second amendment to the Constitution of the United States, as well as its interpretation by every major commentator and court in the first half-century after its ratification, indicates that what is protected is an individual right of a private citizen to own and carry firearms in a peaceful manner." Right to Keep and Bear Arms: Report of the Subcommittee on the Constitution of the Committee on the Judiciary, United States Senate, Ninety-seventh Congress, Second Session. U.S. Government Printing Office. 1982. Digitized September 30, 2008.

From the NYSRPA v Bruen "Today, we decline to adopt that two-part approach. . . . Despite the popularity of this two-step approach, it is one step too many. Step one of the predominant framework is broadly consistent with Heller, which demands a test rooted in the Second Amendment's text, as informed by history."

I've been looking for suitable donors for a couple years, only coz my mech is a car nut and is game. But just the suitable donors have been too much added to I know what won't be cheap to convert.
There was a show on BBC or the like that was a Welsh company doing conversions. Interesting.

You can get Fiat 500e all day long for less than 10k (a lot less, sometimes) and I think the Bosch drive train would be awesome for a conversion. It would have to be something small though. And ideally something without a compelling power plant to start with. Maybe a Sprite Bug eye, or a fiat 850, old Mini, or even a Porsche 914. I bet it would be relatively affordable and easy to do.

I set mine to charge to 80% (Tesla recommends this) which lasts me most of a week. For a trip you can tell it to charge to 100% and have all the range. It's not often I need it. I'm pretty sure that there is a built in amount at the bottom and top that is not included in the range estimates, so that it never runs all the way out or charges to the real 100%. At least there is for my Fiat, so you'd think...

It ain't cheap. I sorta know a guy who does this as a hobby. He is working on a EV conversion for a late '60s muscle car - so far he's dropped more than $30K into it and he ain't done yet.

It is what it is.

They seem to have missed the biggest problem: software updates often only come for 5 years. VW has committed to 15, I think. But a lot of companies aren't even updating for five years.

Battery life doesn't matter if, for example, insurance companies won't insure because they're easily hacked and not getting patched.

Maybe someone will make an EV that is no more susceptible to hacking (and therefore the need for software updates) than an ICE vehicle. Come to think of it, aren't most EVs besides Teslas made this way?
