….Oct 10 to Hulu….remastered in high definition from original source and will keep original theme sung by Al Jarreau…..all 67 episodes…..

……the show featured a lot of music…..wonder if there will be substitutions……

Moonlighting Finally Finds Streaming Home on Hulu

....The Blue Moon Detective Agency is once again open for business — finally.

After years stuck in streaming limbo, Moonlighting — one of the 10 most requested series by TVLine readers — will now be available to stream on Hulu, with all five seasons hitting the service on Tuesday, Oct. 10.

According to Hulu, each episode has been remastered in high definition from the original film source. The streamer also notes that the series will retain its Grammy-nominated title track recording by Al Jarreau

The groundbreaking dramedy starred Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd as bickering private detectives David Addison and Maddie Hayes, who solved crimes while fighting a strong attraction to each other. Allyce Beasley costarred as the agency’s receptionist Agnes DiPesto, with Curtis Armstrong as temp-turned-junior detective Herbert Viola. The series ran from 1985 to 1989 on ABC, becoming a buzzy hit with a trailblazing mix of comedy and drama, along with elaborate fantasy sequences and meta jokes that broke the fourth wall.

Despite its popularity and influence, though, Moonlighting had previously not been available on any streaming service due to complicated music licensing issues. In April 2022, series creator Glenn Gordon Caron told The Wrap that Disney execs informed him that “the big problem… is the show is just larded with music. None of those rights have been sewn up,” and the studio believes “it would be cost prohibitive to go get them now.”.....

…….and the cow jumped over the…..moon….?!

Original theme song, but what about the dozens/hundreds of other songs, including those of the musical episodes?

They only mention the "title track" as being authorized.

A bit further down in the article:

In April 2022, series creator Glenn Gordon Caron told The Wrap that Disney execs informed him that “the big problem… is the show is just larded with music. None of those rights have been sewn up,” and the studio believes “it would be cost prohibitive to go get them now.”

How much you wanna bet they've cut scenes and swapped out for generic music thru most of the show.

Thinking specifically of two episodes; the Shakespeare/Taming of the Shrew one (where they sing Good Lovin' at the church) and the dream sequence (in what episode, I forget) where Addison does a mime/dance to Billy Joel's Big Man on Mulberry Street.

(Shades of the troubles with getting WKRP in Cincinnati on disc & streaming; the first attempt (by Sony) was laughably bad with the replacement music. The Shout!Factory release is markedly better, though some things are not included, including this gem.)

…..there is a flow up article that says all the songs sung by Cybill Shepherd, Willis and supporting cast are intact and any that are ‘critical’ to the storyline…….’ambiance music ‘ in supper clubs, cocktail parties and bar scenes have been swapped out….

Loved that one. Just got Hulu back for Only Murders in the Building. Think I’ll wallow in that nostalgia.

Thanks for that one. I watched the entire Shout!Factory DVD collection, disappointed at the swap-out for Dogs. It made the dialog of entire scene a bit strange: "Are those dogs?" with no sound of dogs. I was just glad that, in the defection episode, the Russian defector was allowed to say "Hold me closer, tiny dancer" instead of a dubbed over "Hold my toaster, terrible dresser."

Swapped-out music or not, I'm looking forward to Moonlighting. I only taped two episodes in the '80s, both at slow speed on a non-hifi VHS. Not satisfying.
