I've been in the market for a decent bass. I got used to bass on a 70s japanese SG copy that I loved and kept around for years until it was pretty much dead. Now am using a bottom of the line yamaha that is nice enough, but I want better.

these get good customer reviews

also comes in sunburst and seafoam green

any other ideas are welcome

After a LOT of research and review reading on my part, my daughter decided to get the 40th Anniversary Strat that was on clearance for very cheap a while back that I recommended for her. While I’m not a guitar player myself, I’m familiar enough with the differences between good stuff and cheap crap in the band world, and it seems like a very nice instrument for the money. Some reviewers said it was about as close as you could get to an actual Fender, while others said it may even beat out an entry level Fender in some ways. For the price she paid, she loves it.

This has barely anything to do with your question but I bought a 2014 anniversary edition SG this year for around $1,000 (used) and I love it soooo much.... wish I had bought it 20 years ago when I first decided to learn.

Also be aware that your SG copy is most likely short scale (there was a long scale version of the SG available only for a couple years in the early 70s) and the Squier looks to be long scale (30.5" vs 34".)

If I was interested in playing bass I’d be all over that. Modern Squiers are quite good thanks to CAD/CAM.

I haven't played one but they are supposed to be decent instruments. I do have a Mexican made Fender Jazz Bass that I bought in the mid 90's which is pretty decent. I replaced the bridge pup with a Seymour Duncan JB as the pickups, were mediocre. Bridge and tuners aren't great either but hopefully these new basses have better hardware and pups.

BTW, there's also a slick deals Squier 40th Anniversary Strat available now for $284.99 from Musicians Friend:

btw, thanks for the strat link, but I have an old fernadez that I like well enough, and just not very into strats. I have an epiphone SG that I need to get fixed, but I think that'll be my main solid body. Still in love with the J9 - had some work done on it recently and it's really nice now!

That's nice. I'm a big fan of maple fretboard Strats.

But I already have enough of them, and I can quit buying more anytime, honest...

Super nice looking. What’s cool is that it will likely go up in value.
