wish I had more reliable wind here and fewer NIMBYs.

We have lots of wind here but I can't seem to find the prices in US dollars.

I've invested in a company called Harmony Wind Turbines that makes vertical stack turbines that can open and close depending on conditions. It allows them to make more consistent amounts of energy over a wider range of conditions.

Curious; at a good operating speed, how loud is the mechanism; for example, how many decibels at say 20 feet away?

Maybe roll your own wind farm.

$2500 each.

That seems a bit hefty for one unit. But it is the type that would work on my roof whereas the Harmony might be too much for my roof to support.

That price is for the whole kit not just the turbine itself.

Very impressive. How about weather resistance? Heavy rain, snow, freezing rain (and maybe even hail)?

The blades look like bird-choppers with those speeds. I like wind power but its downside (other than HOA/neighbor acceptance) is its toll on birds. Maybe bats too?

I watched a video maybe a year ago of a guy who made one with a disused washing machine motor

Hurts like a bastid...

Looks good, thanks for that. Only 3.5 orders of magnitude fewer than cats, that'll be narrowed in no time.

Like 700 years.

Layman’s opinion, but I believe it’s the turbines with airplane-style blades that kill the birds. The OP “blade” configuration is dramatically different.

yea, but I'm pretty sure that frequency will cause cancer in whales.
or perhaps it's whales in cancer .....

That is a vertical-axis wind turbine, which frankly captures so little of the wind's energy versus the traditional horizontal-axis design that unless you can get and install one for free, forget it.

Horizontal-axis residential-scale wind turbines are usually loud as h**l.

And you never want them mounted on your house due to the vibrations they would cause.

Keep in mind to produce the power they advertise you need a sustained wind speed of 20 mph at your location.

That's not true. That common misconception came from incorrect data collected a long time ago. From Harmony's website:

>Everyone says that Savonius turbines have terrible efficiency compared to other designs. Why are you wasting time and money on this?

It’s understandable that there’s a lot of confusion surrounding this topic. When you do an internet search for “wind turbine efficiencies,” 85% of the time you find this incorrect graph, showing Savonius turbines with the lowest ratings. This graph is wrong and has unfortunately been published for several decades. The magic of the internet makes people think just because they found a quick answer that it’s the RIGHT answer.

However, if you dig deeper, you’ll find that this was a “mistake” (maybe deliberately done?) made back in the 1950’s or 60’s in some key publications.* That mistake simply got propagated and multiplied on the internet.

These would be good for the rooftops of high rises. Constant wind and would be easier to install than blade type units.

there's a number of res houses shown on their site.

Think it just depends on where one is in the wind path.

VAWT remain a joke because in a residential application there's no easy way to get away from ground-induced turbulence which kills the usable wind energy.

Which is why even HAWT need to be installed on top of tall poles.

One of the latter installed above a house roofline as pictured isn't going to work worth jack either.
