Fig tree

I was about to piggyback on wurm's tomato thread but decided to make a separate post after all.

My neighbor gave us a small fig tree 2 years ago and it grew so fast and made delicious figs this year. Much sweeter than fresh figs from the store and also much better then figs from a friend who was very proud of her figs... until she tastes our figs. Now she wants a tree from us. We also want to multiply this tree to plant a few more around the house and give to a few more friends.

I plan to ask the neighbor, I guess he know what he's doing, but also if you have any advice, please share.

do you plant seeds? do you need to graft (beyond my skills). or just cut a small branch, put in a vase with water for a while and then plant?

very helpful site.

I'm jealous. Our 2 trees have 2 little, ityy bitty, teeny weeny figs on them that I doubt will get bigger or ripen.
Mostly coz we don't have enough sunlight each day.

We have a fig tree and I have successfully taken cuttings from it. Cut off a shoot about 15" in length. Trim off most of the leaves (if any) leaving the bud at the end. Plant it half way into the ground in a shady spot after mixing sand or grit to the bottom of the hole. You can tell when it's rooted when new leaves start to form. With us here in the UK that would be 6-9 months.

Good luck

I wouldn't have parked it that close to the house. That sucker is gonna grow like a mug. Fast.

What variety?
We had a big brown turkey fig, at our old house.

We had a massive fig tree at home.

The figs were huge and purple when ripe.

They were delicious.

Our dog thought so.

In season, we had to check the tree for ripe figs before letting him into the yard, because he'd pluck the low ones.

On occasion I caught him jumping up to grab branch and shake it 'till figs fell.

I'm tempted, but I'm doubtful that figs would thrive in MA.

Yeah, the OLD figs here are massive. But they don't like the heat and direct sun. The ones down the street, shaded by giant oaks are super healthy and HUGE.

We know NOTHING about figs. Our neighbor who gave us this tree told us to plant it there.

figs are usually Zones 7 - 12.
see where you are on a hardiness map.

Eastern Mass, maybe, but you'd need 8 hrs of sun in the grow season.

Zone 7a. That seems iffy on the fig.
