SSD to SSD via powered USB3 C hub. (can't find the one he has)
1 SSD is MacOS Ex.
The other is ExFAT.
Both are latest gen Samsung.
Just copying MacOS to ExFAT.
1.75 of 2 TB.
Stopped after 10 hrs by itself.
Just restarted, with 1 folder, from where it left off.

I read complaints about Ventura copy speed in general.
Is this yet another feature of Venty?

Is this Finder copy, or a utility? 1.75 TB implies the internal drive is close to 90% full. I can see why you are impatient to back up the files.

I am pretty sure that is slower than copying to an old fashioned HD or SDXC Card. In searching slowness, I found a warning on AppleInsider that it's very easy to bork the internal drive in Ventura when trying to set up an external boot drive by accidentally choosing the internal.

1. Why ExFAT... copying files to a Linux/Windows machine? It might be faster to reformat APFS and start it over.

2. I would not have a hub in there unless I knew it was essentially invisible in for this function. Besides it being a possible bottleneck, it's not unknown to forget and plug something else in or jiggle a cable and bork the copy/backup.

I can't speak to copying from SSD to SSD but I did copy ~900GB from an MacBook M1 Pro w/1TB to a 2TB Crucial SSD formatted APFS in an Orinoco single SSD fanless USB-C enclosure (? I'll have to doublecheck the brand) - and we're talking hundreds of thousands of Photo library cache files, along with thousands of 2-6mb photos and hundreds of 10+mb videos and it took somewhere between 40 and 120 minutes. I'd say more than quadruple that is too long.

I've copied similar 1TB to 2.5" spinning platter formatted ExFat from internal and I think it took 5-6 hours.

ChronoSync does a better job than the Finder sometimes. It will allow you to skip a problem file, for example.

I found Ventura copying to be WAY better than previous OSes. Used to be that I'd grab a million files and drag to another window and the copy window pops up saying 'preparing to copy" and often would stay there a long time - sometimes forever without actually beginning the copy.

That's why I wanted to use CCC last time, but see that it isn't completely compatible with ventura. I decided to just drag and drop and THIS time, it just started copying.

that's one APFS SSD to another. ZOOM!

1. I think client's hub is operating at USB 2.0 speeds.

2. Yes, Ventura can resume some copy-operations.

USB hubs sometimes slow down to the slowest speed of the slowest connected device.

With USB-C, that "slowest connected device" can be a cheap/bad cable.

Weird.

Maybe just a cheap/bad hub then, or something messed with read/write operations.

No antivirus, right? An aggressive "live file scan" will bring large copy-operations to a grinding stand-still.

Note that if a copy-operation seems slow, you can look in the System Profiler (aka System Information) window under "USB" and see the connection speeds of all devices.

I forgot to check SP for speed.
But I think he is ready to move on and just call the newer Sam 2023/4 with an ExFAT so he can do as he pleases.

You simply wouldn't believe the number of dupe files he has.
Hardware and cloud.
He must have 100TB of back up drives, prolly 75% copies of copies of copies of back ups of back ups.
Universal should have used him to watch their vaults.

Convinced him to get off iCloud and Backblaze and just use iDrive.

turned out one of the C cables was not OEM Samsung and was USB2.
Changed out to OEM Samsung and speeds in USB window went to 10G on both SSDs.
Still slow as molasses.
Plugged the USB3 hub back in and it shows as 10G in the USB info window as well. But slow as...
