LinkedIn?

Do people still use it? I signed up many moons ago. In fact, searching through old emails shows an email I exchanged with a client back in 2008. And I think I updated my page in 2014, but haven't even logged in since then. And now of course I can't because of the inactive time.

I'm not looking for a job or even to be very active with it. The only reason I ask is because a google search for a person I'd like to contact, only shows a LinkedIn page as a method to do so. But hell, I can't tell how old it is. And the only way to even attempt it would be to re-register an account. I suppose I could do so, then just forget about it again.

Thoughts? Thanks.

I am still active and I am retired. I wish old cohorts happy birthday and such.

Nothing more than a Facebook now.

I signed up back in either '06 or '08, I don't remember and I think it's more than another FaceBook. I have contacts that post interesting work-related pieces, but yes, there are some that just wish each other happy birthdays and such, but no photos of the food they had for dinner or if their dog is in heat. It is definitely a networking tool. Over the years I've gotten a gig or two and have hired one or two people for short assistant jobs. I'm not active anymore or at least like I used to be but am still logged in. I do update my profile now and again and have gotten some inquires but nothing I've been interested in. You should make another account just to check it out.

I was invited to sign up so they could scrape my contacts and spam them all. I declined.

Just don't give them access to your contacts when they ask and that won't happen.

LinkedIn is my "social" network; I only signed up in a brief, intentional gap between jobs in 2015 on the idea that the next time I was switching jobs it might not because I intentionally had an employment gap. Turned out to be valid the job after that...

In the IT space there's a decent amount of networking there, I suppose it all depends on the career field. Don't see many actors. Jobs are posted there, and some even take a "one click" application that sends over the information contained in your profile.

You don't have to use the app nor let them access your contacts. I used a separate email address to avoid that risk. It's pretty easy to find people, and in this work from home era it provides one avenue for workplace water cooler style banter.

It mostly avoids the partisan politics on other social networks like Facebook, most participants wants to keep it professional.

Yes. We use it all the time for freelancing. Makes connecting in the area needed MUCH easier.

Well, this is interesting. I signed up last night and proceeded to send a message to the person I'm trying to contact. Just signed in again and there's no record of my message ever even being written. This, after tweaking over and over again to get it down to under 200 characters. I'm sure I hit "Send", but maybe not.

Take 2 later this evening.

I signed up ages ago, but only rarely use it. I did use it within the past year to try to track down contact info for some old friends from school.

Well, this sucks. I couldn't figure out why my message didn't go through so I figured I'd just write another. But every time I tried, I got a pop-up asking me to let AI help me by opting into a free trial of Premium, because evidently...

I signed up just so I could check out some people I used to work with to see what they were up to. I didn’t enter any contacts, and I told it I worked for a company called “None of Your Business”. You’d be surprised at how many “coworkers” it found. wink smiley

Anyway, I found the page for the guy who used to be my team lead. Hoo boy did he ever exaggerate and flat out lie about what he did. I figure that’s what most people do.

This is true if you are not connected. You need to connect with the person first. You can include a message in the connection request.
