Photos or printing text?
Want to use it as a scanner and/or copier?
How often will it be used?

Simplest printer would be a Black and White laser with no scanner or duplex.

Anything else just adds complexity.

bottom of the line brother laser printer is pretty darned simple. Plug usb into the computer, put paper in the printer, type command-P and watch the printed page emerge...

Dell often has laser printers on sale but make sure they are Mac compatible. I’ve bought one for about $50.

Yep. I have had one of these for years, as I mostly have to print the occassional B&W document or form.
An AirPrint printer would be very nice though. I have to physically plug my MBA in to print.

+1, my monocrome dual-side brother is going on 15 years+. It's been through 2 undergrads and 2 masters.

9 posts and I am disappointed to not see a single mention of proofing ads in B&W.

Thank you, C(-)ris....I was looking for the "proofing B/W ads" comment! (for those not in the know, there was a long and hysterical thread on the DealMac forums (the predecessor to MacResource), in which someone was asking for suggestions for just such a printer.

P.S. Check your date codes!!!!!! (another random, and funny old thread....probably "had to be there" to think it's funny, though)

Yeah, I thought about going there…

I have a Brother 5250DN, and then recently someone gave me a lightly used, newer, but very similar model.

Both are hooked up using Airport Express set up as a print and audio server.

Works like a charm.

Yeah, I haven't looked at newer Brother laser printers yet. My ~20 year old HL-1670N duplexing printer is still going strong. Though I may have buy "compatible" toner or drum cartridges the next time I need to replace them
