Apple - 'lightning port is still fine in 2023'

Did you need any more proof that Apple just 'called it in' with the M3 iMacs?

Look no further than the Apple accessories are still... charged with lightning.

And the 'magic mouse' is STILL charged upside-down.

I guess the EU needed to mandate ALL accessories needed to move to USBC.

Apple, W T F?!

Cause it's unnecessary?

And the MM port on the bottom is as much of a non-problem today as it was the day it came out. A giant pfffft.

if you wanna attack it, the ergonomics of the MM are far more troubling.

Can't disagree.

When the MM first debuted with the charging port on the bottom, soooo many sites had Mac 'experts' complaining that they couldn't use the mouse while charging.

Somehow, changing batteries in the middle of their work was seen as preferable to observing the ample notification that the MM's battery was low, allowing time for convenient charging for another long run.

Also, for accessories, I much prefer the Lighting connector over USB-C.

And no, I don't consider external drives to be mere accessories.

However, I will gladly suffer USB-C as a charging connector that replaces third-parties' micro-USB connectors.

An Apple Magic Mouse Pad, that wirelessly charges a Magic Mouse while you use it. Everyone will be happy until they see Apple's prices.

Roughly 50% of the power in wireless charging goes to waste heat, which also slow-kills the battery.

There's an argument that charge-cables and bricks are wasteful and consume energy when manufactured, but this ignores the cost of manufacturing wireless chargers and bricks. And to deal with the stuff of life, consumers end up buying BOTH wireless and wired chargers, compounding the problem.

As a species, we're doing a great job destroying the planet.

Recently spent 2 weeks in 6 countries within the EU, and not one hotel had a USB-C port in the room. Just about all had USB-A though. Pretty sure that 5 years from now, the results will be the exactly the same.

That's perfectly legal.

It's the device with the battery that charges off of USB that is supposed to be USB-C.

I have USB-A to USB-C cables, and usually travel with them. I'm guessing that you have a few of those cables as well.

the bottom charging is a pain. when the keyboard gets too low i can charge it in and keep working. when i mess up and the mouse battery dies I cannot do any work without kludge work-arounds until I turn the mouse on its side to charge.

that reminds me. i'm about to leave town. i should put that mouse on my charging station while i'm gone...

Honestly, I find Lightning plugs easier to insert than USB-C.

At least the latter finally made USB side-up-agnostic. My question is why they still make plenty of things with mini-USB charge ports. Those suck, and per the busybodies in the EU are obsolete, IIRC.

I can understand this when the the mouse battery is only and its duty cycle short.

It can fail without notice.

But I've found my low battery notifications give my plenty of time to charge the device when I'm not needing it.

I can take a break, charge it for a few minutes, get back to whatever I was doing with even more time to charge it properly without interrupting my day.

This is exactly the reason, and the only reason I much prefer Lightning over USB-C.

I don't need to look at the port to find it, I can get it in easily, zero fiddle factor.

Yes, I don't need to know which side is 'Up' with USB-C but every time I use it, it's like my first time ever using a USB-A port, almost every time.

It's maddening.

My M1 MBA has two of them, so it's twice as much 'fun'.

The mini-USB port is just bad.

Not one of my devices that use it lock on to the connector like any other type of connector.

This is by design, but I don't know why.

It's only saving grace is that it's immediately apparent which side is 'up' even though I still feel like my first time trying to make it connect.

This brings me to the one of the worst connectors ever — micro-USB.

It does lock in place unlike mini-USB, but it takes strong light and decent eyesight to see which end is up.

Even then when connecting without looking the fiddle factor is high in this one.

Actually, it's high most of the time.

And for some reason, dji chose to further confuse the matter by making the port on the controller of my Mini rectangular instead of the actual shape of the connector.

They put a decal next to it to show the correct orientation.

I'll pass on the MM because of the ergos, but will get a Magic Trackpad before the Lighting model disappears.

Yes, this is a First World problem.

But it's also a pure greed play by Apple, and at the expense of users.

Apple USED to be the one that 'forced' adoption of great new standards.

But that was the plunky startup fighting Goliath.

As the Big Cheese, Apple is just doing what they were criticizing.

And I will die on the hill that there is NOTHING redeeming about a Magic Mouse - v2 is even worse with its stupid charge port placement.

If my Magic Mouse dies, I take a five minute break while it recharges and it’s good for the rest of the day. I just have to remember to recharge it overnight that night.
