I buy and sell things for profit as a side gig. Motorcycles, cameras, cars, tools, antiques, etc. I use CL exclusively. I've been doing so since the dawn of CL.

I've been having zero luck in the last few months.

My neighbor across the street was as anti-FB as I am but stopped by after selling his small backhoe. He had it on CL for a month, nothing. Used different locales. Nothing.

Put it on Marketplace. He sold it in 36 hours. He had 60 people asking about it. He showed me on his phone the number of messages. It was a downpour.

What's the smartest way to sign up and use FB now? I refuse to use it on my phone.

I'm considering getting a non-name gmail address and signing up for FB with a juxtapose of my real name. Maybe my first and middle.

Suggestions welcome.

These are humbling days.

I signed up just a little more than 3 years ago just to see what was available for motorcycles when I was looking. In fact, the bike I bought was one I found on Facebook Marketplace while I was browsing under my wife's account back then. For that reason alone I signed up for my own account, using one of my secondary email addresses. And I filled out the absolute minimum when doing my profile. I rarely log on, and when I do it's only because I'm curious about a particular item I may be looking for that is either unavailable, not local, or way overpriced on Craigslist.

Now that I think about it, I might try listing a few things I have on Craigslist now that those are getting zero response.

Fake name and birthday, hotmail account for email, Brave Browser, Tor network or VPN.

Yes, this is fine. It could hurt your ability to sell a bit if your account doesn't look like a real person. Would help if your gmail matches your FB account name more or less.
If you don't want the app on your phone (good move) , you'll probably want to take every transaction over to e-mail or text before finalizing because FB makes messenger next to impossible on mobile browser.

Burner phone with the battery out when you're not using it. Only use it away from locations you regularly visit.

It must be. Talked to an old neighbor last night and she gave me her email address and it was a hotmail account.

Also, to comment on above... I don't have a FB account, but have also considered getting one to use marketplace. I've been using my wife's account to buy a few things. She did say that I (you) might not get a lot of interest if I sell something since it would look like I am a scammer since I would have just joined.

You can try to be as private as you can on FB, but it's a losing battle. Even though I don't have an account, I know that they've almost certainly got a ton of information about me. My wife has a different last name than me, but again, I'm sure FB knows that.
