F/U to "Can someone identify this brand of Ceiling Fan switch?"

[forums.macresource.com]

It started acting up. For example, when I turn on the lights, the fan comes on as well and then the lights shut off after a second or two.

It was glitchy for a few weeks but I always managed to get it running, now I cannot keep the lights on.

I wonder if it has to do with the fact that I used LED bulb? the previous owners had incandescent lights in this fixtures (but then they had almost the entire house on incandescent).

I hope it is the switch, not the fan. I guess the fan is a lot more expensive and a pain to replace

Any idea how to check if it is the switch, before I order a new one? it's not clear to me if I need to buy the same brand of switch, or if I can buy a different brand. Do they need to be matched?

Any advice you have is welcome. I never had ceiling fans before so I don't know much about this topic.

Thanks

I know...

so it looks like I need Casablanca Inteli-Touch W-32 Wall Control which is not available new on amazon.

$130 used or $200 new on eBay. How can I tell if the problem is the wall switch or the control box in the fan?

based on either of those 2 prices, what's an entire new fan/switch combo going to cost?

does it do the same thing with incandescent bulbs? you or a neighbor have got to have one somewhere you could use for a 5 minute test.

A review on Amazon says that only incandescent bulbs are compatible with this controller - no LEDs. The control scheme is a nightmare. You’ll be better off starting fresh with a new fan/controller.

I put back some incandescent bulbs, same thing.

I do not have another fan with this type of controller in the house.

Kids have the simple ON/OFF wall switch and the pull chain mounted directly on the fan.

In master bedroom we had a fan but replaced it with a modern light fixture, still have the controller on the wall but it's a different brand, I only use the dimmer for the lights.

Are you suggesting that I should ask neighbors if I can go borrow their controller for a 5 minute test? like unmount it from their wall??? I would never dare anything like this, LOL

It seems like I should probably replace the entire controller board and controller unit in the wall, if possible. Replacing the fan is going to be a pain since it's heavy and mounted on a very high ceiling.

Any recommendations for an LED compatible control unit?

Why don’t you just buy a new remote/controller setup. HD and Lowe’s sell them…

Like this: Universal fan remote

Hmm, that's much less expensive that the Fan Man Lightning conversion kit. the current fan had 6 or 7 speed I think, and i was using speed 2-3-4 over the Summer depending on how hot it was and how quiet I wanted to be during ZOOM meetings.

Maybe I can get by with a 3 speed fan, but I need to look more into this. I have other lights in the room and there is no need for a fan for a few months, so I got time to look into more options.

Thanks all.

Casablanca from that era are very nice fans.

Thanks for the videos, I saved them in my DIY playlist. My son has an older Casablanca fan with a very similar control. I know the lights used to come on by themselves during a bad thunderstorm and no one could ever explain why. It's in the house he inherited from his grandfather and I know his grandfather paid about $700 for that fan 40 years ago.

BTW: Hunter doesn't even have 4 speed internal pull chain controls for their own fans. I ordered two off eBay years ago, one for a repair of our own 60" and one as a spare. Like $5 a piece.

We had a circa 1989 Casablanca Fan/light in our old house. A power surge would also make it do weird stuff.
Sometimes it would fire up to full speed with the lights on. The controller was older and had a horrible interface where you toggled the switches in a certain order or held them down to get it to reverse or speed up or the lights to come on.
It was a very nice fan but a horrible controller.

We have something similar, be aware that the receiver installation will require you to have access to the mounting plate of the fan itself at the ceiling. Since you said it is quite high, a better option may be to just get a new (up-to-date) wall controller.

Something like these, this one is a three speed: [www.amazon.com]

and here is a six-speed: [www.amazon.com]

But there are a myriad of similar units

Ombligo,

I am intrigued. My understanding is that the current unit in the wall has a counterpart inside the fan, at least this is what I infer from those youtube videos.

Your recommendations for 3 and 6 speed seem to be the wall unit only, I am not sure how that would control the box inside the fan.

The remote control ones all have a receiver that you wire into the fan, really easy if you have access. I have those on ours. If you go that route and smart control is not required, I suggest this one as it is thermostat controlled and will adjust the speed depending upon the temperature. We have it on our bedroom fan and it works very well - [www.amazon.com]

My understanding on the wall unit is you set the fan to high and leave it there, then the controller regulates the power just like a dimmer switch. That is just how I understood it, I could be wrong.

OK, I see. I also read some have DC motors (more quiet) and some have AC motors (a little bit nosier). I need to figure out what I have and order the correct one.

One thing that is confusing is that the Fan Man Lightning sells these conversion kits which are around $150 + controller ($40) total around $190 and some of the recommendations here are in the $40-50 range.

I want to make sure we're not trying to install a AC kit on a DC motor, LOL

If you are talking about the remote receiver, unless you have DC lines in your house, there would still be AC going into the fan. The receiver wires into the AC line.

Have you looked behind that current faceplate? Just to insure it has normal wiring between it and the fan?

I did not look behind the faceplace.

yes, AC into the fan, but the motor itself could be DC. It's supposed to be more quiet, as far as I understand.

I believe that DC motors in ceiling fans are a recent innovation - I could be wrong.

Having said that, I’m not sure that it makes a difference. If there are 3 wires going into the fan(usually white, black and blue (power to the light), you can use an “aftermarket” remote/receiver.

Then you can use the remote. Here is the wiring diagram
