If you have a SSD bookmarked to buy hoping for a for Black Friday deal, you might not want to wait.

Prices will likely be up 8% to 12% by February because of chip manufacturers production cuts are starting to hit the market.

Hard drives, too.

Prices on high capacity drives are already up 20-30% just in the last month. Black Friday deals would have to be hefty to make up the difference.

thanks. Went ahead and grabbed the 4tb nvme drive I've had on my watchlist for a while.

Interestingly, it was just a shade more $$ than the 2tb nvme I bought back in 2020. Amazing how SSD prices have dropped as capacities have grown over time.

I've been seeing this, and regretting not moving sooner.

I don't see Black Friday cuts coming, at least no to my benefit.

The NAND producers have been losing incredibly now for some time... prices need to more than double from their lows to come back to profitability. They all seemed to cut production about the same time and it's quickly impacting. We're moderating - but it's not unreasonably to see 2X costs on 1TB and higher cap drives by summer vs. the low stuff. QLC and TLC NAND, until recently, has had a really small dollar price gap despite the giant performance difference (after the cache)... QLC can be down to 40-50Mb/s and typically under 100MB/s once cache is passed that can be as little as 1-2% of a drive. What will see over time will be larger increase percentage in the uber cheap QLC drives as all of this goes up. But will see it when it happens. The market is a mess right now - that is for sure.

I'm always looking, but really don't need anything right now. The 8TB Samsung SSD at Amazon is $346 now. I think it dropped into the $330 range last week, but is back up. It's still lower than it was about 6 months ago when I looked. But as I said, I don't really need it now. I have a pair of 16TB externals that I haven't even taken out of the box yet. I always buy in pairs... one for data, one for backup.

I have 11TB of external SSD storage on my Studio, and currently have about 1.75TB available.

So the fake shortage is suddenly going to become real by cutting production.
