‘ Even In Matte Black, The Tesla Cybertruck Still Looks Like Crap ‘

“ Allegedly, production of the Tesla Cybertruck will begin before the end of the year. At least that’s what Elon Musk says, and you know you can always trust a Musk timeline. As more videos come out showing pre-production prototypes, though, including quite a few broken ones, it’s starting to look like Elon Musk was probably right when he said Tesla had dug its own grave with the Cybertruck. Take, for example, the Cybertruck prototype that showed up at a Malibu cars and coffee event over the weekend, as reported by InsideEVs.

The author, friend of Jalopnik Daniel Golson, was personally at the event and got an up-close look at the Cybertruck that was driven by Tesla designer Franz von Holzhausen. Based on what Golson saw, the matte-black-wrapped Cybertruck is either a long way from being production-ready, or it’s just going to go into production anyway regardless of all of its flaws. Odds are, it’s the latter. “

You know, the same was said when square body pick ups were introduced. Then again when the ‘new look’ Dodge Ram appeared (and influenced designs afterwards). I think some of us have to just face the fact that we’re getting old, and our tastes may be a generational thing.

Lux,

That's being kind. I thought it looked horrendously awful from the moment I saw a photo of it. Think in terms of futuristic crap that puts appearance way ahead of utility and usability. If I was in the market for a truck of any kind be it ICE, hybrid or EV, it'd wouldn't be in consideration at all.

I’d be curious, in what way does this lack in terms of utility and usability, versus a conventionally styled pick up truck?

That's a great analogy.

I personally find all sorts of cars with design languages an eye sore. The series of 'boxy' or 'box' cars including the Toyota Scion - just not a fan.

The stated design language for the Cybertruck was derived from Blade Runner. I think the matte black color looks great.

What many are missing with this external design exoskeleton is the cool underpinnings of the Cybertruck. They used structural design principles from SpaceX to build out the bed and core ( I think Honda is the only one using this approach at all), then added the outside panels (which are stainless steel). By design, it's more like a SpaceX rocket than a traditional truck made by Detroit.

For auto fans, here's a great link from Sandy Munro:

[insideevs.com]

One more on the CT design:

[medium.com]

Will it be successful? I have no clue. But it's definitely different.

Interesting links, thanks.

Sandy Munro:

“I look at it as something that could fulfill some pickup truck needs, more like a utility truck, similar to my existing Jeep (Wrangler Rubicon). The difference is that I can get my quads and my bikes in it, but I don’t think I would be hauling two-by-fours or material for building a house. If I wanted something like that, then I’d move toward the Rivian.”

Can't agree. I'd prefer the first three to the Tesla thing. The Tesla looks like it could have been designed for a film like Fritz Lang's "Metropolis".

IMHO, it's been a question for almost a century; why can't the styling of the cars we buy look like those one-off, "concept" designs?

Why must they always be toned down, diluted, homoginized to the point of looking like everything already available?

These never made it to the dealership!

[duckduckgo.com]

Today's Rivian pickup design looks as different from this early "pickup"...

as Tesla's "pickup" design looks different from a "customary" pickup design...

The first time I saw it, I was reminded of low-budget bad '70s sci-fi TV and movies showing a dystopian future, showing it as some kind of assault vehicle.

In fact, I've not been at all a fan of any Tesla vehicle except maybe the original Roadster, and I don't remember it well enough to be certain.

To me, all there vehicles fall just short of the mark of looking good.

From some angles they're ok, from others, I think 'Did they forget about his part' or 'Did they run out of time?'

The Truck is by far the worst offender.

It doesn't look good from any angle, only in the far off distance.

But I certainly won't begrudge anybody who like it or buys one.

I'm tired of hearing or reading all the idiots who proclaim 'more money than good sense' etc.

It's not for me, but if it makes somebody happy, fine by me.

Frankly, I think that most modern pickup trucks with the enormous plastic chrome grilles are hideous. The Tesla truck is a bit weird but doesn't have the over the top excessive chrome bling of most of the competitors such as...

All of Teslas other vehicles are so conservatively styled. I think tasteful would be a good description. So where that truck design came from is anyone's guess. It just doesn't fit in with the others. I'll never own another truck, so it makes no difference to me, but it is odd.

Carnos,

Here are some key issues. Visibility is definitely a significant issue.

A. Side view visibility looks questionable.

b. The bottom of the rear window seems too high, further reducing visibility.

c. The roof slopes too much in the passenger section. Could impact comfort of passengers and definitely impacks rear view visibility.

d. The front end slopes too much. The Suzuki Sidekick had a similar problem. I drove one regularly and the sloping drop it made it difficult to gauge how close you were to other vehicles at traffic lights/stop signs and objects when parking.

e. The thickness of the sides of the flatbed appear to take away from usable flatbed space. I hope the bed is long enough and wide enough to hold at least one standard size pallet (48"x40”).

f. Not a fan of all the angles. Makes it look like a cheap snapped together toy that will be crushed by a kaiju rather than a vehicle that will handle the abuse a truck will sustain while on the job. Give the monster a pair of them and they become stylish roller skates.

Love that thing.

The Tech Bros driving Bro-dozers will love that thing.

The Truck-mommies who only haul kids and groceries to the school and mom will love that thing.

The short haul trailer pullers with a boat of jet ski will love that thing.

That is a majority of Pickup drivers in Texas.

Carnos,

Nearly forgot. There is a question of whether or not Tesla will provide a flat cap for the rear that allows cover to at least the height of the roof all the way back to the tailgate. Or, if not them, will they allow a 3rd party to make one that fits properly.

At the risk of sounding like a rampant defender of this design - I'm not - a lot of the criticisms seen around the Internet seem exaggerated.

Not too bad directly to left and right, but looking to rear is hindered by sheet metal from roof corners to rear corners

b. The bottom of the rear window seems too high, further reducing visibility.

If anything, maybe a little too low; and again the sheet metal from roof to rear corners hinders looking to the right over your shoulder. However...

All vehicle's "length" needs to be acquired and internalized by their drivers; same here.

Plus, all cars including teslas tell you how close you are to other objects. It’s way easier and accurate than going by feeling.

Rolando,

That isn't what I meant by a flat cap. The cap should be rectangular from front to back without a pronounced angle to make it sloping. This allows transport of taller items on the bed, beneath the cap. The cap with the photo of Musk standing on it is an example of what a cap shouldn't be like on a work vehicle.

That and the visibility is definitely compromised in comparison to other trucks. To me, visibility is key. Even my CX-7 is a compromise but it's superior to CR-Vs and Murano's of similar age and vintage. That's one of the reasons I have it instead of one of them.

Key, you shouldn't have to rely on cameras to mitigate flaws in design. Visibility should be reasonably good _without_ cameras. At best, cameras should just enhance otherwise already good visibility. The Cybertruck, based on the photos, lacks good visibility in several key areas. I hope I'm wrong and it's better than what I see in the pictures. If not, then it's an significant flaw.

Which sheds some light on the real reason most people buy a truck anyway...for its looks. Very few buy one on a rational basis. For example I counted almost 80 pickups while driving to the grocery store the other day (and that's just during the drive there, not back). During that 5 mile / 10 minute drive, not one was towing anything or had something in the bed. They were all late model vehicles.
