What kind of turkey will you buy?

I generally put myself in charge of the turkey because its easy and I don't trust anyone else to do it. Its not that making turkey is hard but I have some opinions.

I should settle on what kind of bird I'm going to buy. I once paid a premium for a nice bird from a butcher shop but I don't remember it tasking particularly better than any other reasonably good bird. I just looked at buying from a local butcher shop - sold out. I could order organic from whole foods which is kind of pricey but a known good bird.

I'm not so much price sensitive as I want to feel like I'm getting something for the money.

To be honest, I can't really tell the difference between mid and high end chickens at trader joes. I don't remember the labeling, just that paying the extra money doesn't seem to be worth it. For a while I've been alternating between the two but never could particularly tell the difference.

I have a particularly memory of getting a wonderful bird from a local farmer but there can be a certain luck of the draw with such things.

IMO this is the only turkey recipe worth doing [www.seriouseats.com] - well, I've never had deep fried so I'm open to that.

What kind of bird are you going to buy?

My family hates turkey.. and ham.

We do chicken, several kinds, + all the regular sides. Easier to cook and more variety. =)

Lately we've been doing ham or whole Perdue Roaster in the oven, tastes better than turkey anyway.

I've been wanting to try this grilled turkey recipe. This person used a Weber Genesis which I have an older model.

Just the two of us, so we've pared down to a turkey breast. I know that sounds a bit boring, but Mr. Prymsnap doctors it up very nicely. And to be honest, I've always been more about the sides than the bird.

usually the local M&P grocery has a better natural raised fresh.
but last year we broke with tradition and I made turkey chili.
This year I think I'm gonna make pulled pork & ground turkey lasagna.

Usually will do the Costco, but it's fine dining this year for a change.

Yeah, with just me, the wife, and son (who mostly doesn’t eat meat), we’ll do a small turkey breast. Last year we had friends over and got a big turkey, which I butchered while trying to cut it. Never again.

free range natural from the woods. My brother starts putting out feed early spring that contains a wormer. There is a decent sized flock whose range covers his property. Those not culled are healthier because if the dewormer.

Heller, 554 U.S. 570 (2008) Private citizens have the right under the Second Amendment to possess an ordinary type of weapon and use it for lawful, historically established situations such as self-defense in a home, even when there is no relationship to a local militia.

"The conclusion is thus inescapable that the history, concept, and wording of the second amendment to the Constitution of the United States, as well as its interpretation by every major commentator and court in the first half-century after its ratification, indicates that what is protected is an individual right of a private citizen to own and carry firearms in a peaceful manner." From the NYSRPA v Bruen "Today, we decline to adopt that two-part approach. . . . Despite the popularity of this two-step approach, it is one step too many. Step one of the predominant framework is broadly consistent with Heller, which demands a test rooted in the Second Amendment's text, as informed by history."

For the first time in I don’t know how many years: none. My wife and I have finally passed the family thanksgiving meal on to my son and his wife.

Whatever kind the caterer uses.

We made reservations to go out again, figuring my son and his wife would go to her mom's or sister's house for T-Day. But last week he mentioned that they'd love to join us, but didn't feel comfortable with a newborn and a toddler at a restaurant. So we cancelled our restaurant reservations and are going to try a different restaurant/catering that a co-worker of my wife highly recommended. We'll see how that goes.

Turkey breast in a slow cooker. Was skeptical, but the reviews of recipes I found rave about it. Certainly easier than the oven, and frees it up for stuffing, etc. We'll see . . .

I don't know, the auntie-in-law crew are in charge of that. I do know that the one aunt prefers to serve capon chicken instead of turkey, because turkey can get dry so easily.

I'm debating going that way also ... Instant Pot turkey: [lifemadesweeter.com]
(though I might just do turkey breast rather than whole bird...)

Costco fresh. We looked at them on Monday and noted that they expired on Thanksgiving day. There were people just picking them up and putting them in their baskets. I assume they'll be ok if cooked by the expiration date but we're going to wait and pick one up next Monday. If by chance they are out we'll do a frozen Butterball from the local grocery store.

We tried that once a few years ago because it seemed like a good idea and reviews were good. I can only guess that we screwed something up somehow because it was a bad experiment. May you have much better luck.

I tried a turkey breast that way and it tasted steamed rather than roasted. Now I just follow the traditional Alton Brown method and turns out great.

We'll do crab if fresh crab is available (maybe not...they keep delaying the season opening due to overfishing and other reasons) or salmon.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan
