Yams vs Sweet Potatoes

In Wegmans's a couple of days ago, they had mountains of Yams (which I had no interest in), but no sweet potatoes.

Sweet potatoes are tasty (to me), and they're a Vitamin A powerhouse.

Yams are neither.

Sacrilege! (See my post in the sweet potato/pumpkin thread below.)

... they both have good, but different, health benefits.

Most of the vegetables labelled as yams in the US are actually sweet potatoes. Actual yams are not common. Here's an explanation: [www.almanac.com]

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

My Grandma always said candied yams and sweet potato pie, though she was using the same vegetable.

Red Garnet sweet potatoes have the best flavor, color and texture. Expensive but worth it, especially for holiday dishes.

Made my casserole out of those this year. Super good.

Jewel is my second favorite.

Mr. Lahey: A lot of people, don’t know how to drink. They drink against the grain of the liquor. And when you drink against the grain of the liquor? You lose.

Here they just show up in the store as generic sweet potatoes, usually no indication what variety. Though at rare times in the past they have carried some of the variants such as purple or white sweet potatoes. Some of the sweet potatoes come in with flesh that is more yellow than orange.

Visit a high end grocer like Whole Foods or Fresh Market to get the special varieties. Sometimes Costco carries them too. They are way more expensive than regular but worth it for holiday dishes.

Even the high end grocers in this area do not carry such varieties. For example the closest Whole Foods has Japanese, purple, and Boniata sweet potatoes and that is more variety than going farther to the Hartford, CT area. The Costco in the area doesn't have a produce section for its grocery section of th warehouse.

Now there may be more selections available at the high end grocers in the Boston area, but that is a 2 hour drive without traffic.
