Snowfall rates of 3 inches per hour, thunder, lightning and strong winds are all expected

[wapo.st]

Heavy lake-effect snows are plastering parts of Upstate New York, accompanied by strong winds, plummeting temperatures and the chance of thunder and lightning. Totals of 20 to 30 inches are expected downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario, the heaviest expected Monday night into Tuesday.

Lake-effect snow warnings remain in effect through early Wednesday for extreme northwestern Pennsylvania from Erie to near Buffalo, as well as around the Tug Hill Plateau from Fulton to north of Watertown, N.Y. Syracuse, N.Y., is also included in the zone.

Rapid changes in visibility are anticipated, and could pose issues for drivers in the region, including in part for those on Interstates 80, 90 and 91. Whiteout conditions are possible in the worst of the snow bands, which may contain snowfall rates exceeding 3 inches per hour.

Sounds awful.

Thankfully, i have never had to use the words "lake effect snow" in conversation here in sunny nor cali. 65 and sunny today, with slight breeze... pretty much carbon copy for the next 2 weeks, except for a possible 30% chance of light drizzle in 5-6 days.

I don't think thats particularly surprising for that area, even if its a big single dump.

Valdez (#5 on the list below) is quite snowy but so is the eastern end of Lake Ontario (#9 on the list):

#1 gets more than twice as much snow as Valdez…

In Hamburg, 20 minutes south of Buffalo along Lake Erie we got about 14” so far. More to come later today and tomorrow. The further south from here got it a little worse.
