Looking for a small camera with some zoom

Does anyone have something they like?

I like the looks/specs/size of this Canon SX740... however isnt made anymore? no replacement? Also would like something 1/2 the cost. ;)

Specs don't need to be too crazy, but similar?

I got a used SX540 for $100 at a pawn shop recently. It appears to be a little thicker than that SX740, but has 50x optical zoom vice the SX740's 40x optical zoom. Try pawn shops or craigslist or FB marketplace.

I think for a compact camera, the SX740 is still the "king" at 40x. Other options from Sony, Panasonic and Nikon, I believe, top out at 30x/35x, but are going to be similarly priced. Some of the others will have the option of shooting in RAW, whereas I believe the Canon is limited to JPG.

So, if you want that kind of range at half the price, you're going to have to look for a used or maybe an older model.

My little sony cybershot model DSC-HX90V was a perfect backpacking camera. Bought it several years ago used - still awesome. Tiny - fits is a tshirt pocket (but would be too heavy for that pocket).

It actually has a popup viewfinder so you can take 'real' pictures.

30x zoom - has been replaced by DSC-HX99 that doesn't look any different

I bet I could find a great deal on a barely used one on ebay if I set my mind to it

thanks hal. looks nice.

I just dont remember these costing so much... range really isnt super important, just more than 5x? 10x?

I've looked at DPReview... and the winner is $1000. Nope.

We have a Canon SD 630 from a million years ago that still takes great pics, pocket size, but only 3X... wanted to bump up.

I've got a SX740, and it kicks butt.
I've also got the SX230 that it replaced in the traveling circus fleet. It's in pristine condition, and its 14X zoom will certainly stretch further than your 3X.
LMK if that'll help you. Killer MRF deal, of course. All original packaging, materials, and extra goodies.....

The SX740 is finally going to Maui next month, while the SX230 has been there three or four times, so it's got good references.
The damn pandemic put the kibosh of the SX740's grand travel plans, so it's got some catching up to do w/ the SX230.

cool smiley

I love my Sony DSC HX99. Great pocket camera with SuperZoom.

I have a Canon PowerShot SX40 HS that has the equivalent of a 840mm zoom. I got it for about $200 from Target when they replaced it with the next one--SX50, perhaps? It's been a great camera but I've wanted to get something smaller with an equivalent zoom. But, I just don't want to pay the $500 that it will likely cost.

SX 720, a predecessor to the 740, has been my pocket camera since I got it refurbished in late 2017. Would buy another if cheap and easy as the lense cover became damaged recently. On the lookout for a refurb SX740. Was not aware it was discontinued. I also bought an SX 710 at the same time which will be my fallback I guess if the 720 gets worse, but it has a bit less zoom.

Looks similar in size to my SX50 which is about 3x the size of the SX740.

Yeah, and everything they "recommend" starts at $900. =(

Zoom is the least on my list, I'm already assuming most cameras, even small ones, have a decent zoom, or at least better than any phone.
