Well, my iPhone 8 was starting to have precipitous drops in charge once it hit 60% or so (draining from 60% to below 10% in under and hour..). I decided it was time to upgrade, even though I had hoped to wait another year.

So, I brought home an iPhone 15 Pro from the Verizon store... only feeling slightly dirty for the experience.
I also brought home a Mophie inductive charger for the nightstand (my most often charging location).

Are there any down-sides to inductive charging? Any penalties to battery longevity? I mean, I want this phone to last at least as long as the iPhone 8 did!

Any "Gotcha's" I should be aware of?

Seems to heat the phone more than using a cable, which theoretically shortens battery life by a bit, but there's no way to account for all of the variables to figure out how much if any it's shortening battery life.

Plus roughly 50% of the power goes to waste with inductive charging, but for the amount of energy spent charging a phone it amounts to just a few extra bucks on the electricity bill every year.

My approach is to charge via cable/dock most of the time and use wireless charging only where the convenience or necessity merits it.

Just the basics of induction charging:

Slower that a wire, less efficient, and induces heat.

The last one is a coin toss for me.

The lower the battery level in a 'Phone, the more heat is generated by charging, be it wire or induction.

Also, MagSafe compatible induction chargers currently (LOL) charge at 7.5W vs 15W for an Apple MFi product.

I have both Apple and non-MFi (QI) and it takes longer to charge the phone, and there's still heat involve.

Now it's a heat over time thing, Qi to MacSafe, so I don't know which is more damaging to a battery.

One small data point: my 5s battery went almost five years, charging only by wire before dropping to 82%, at which time it started acting up.

My 12 mini's Max Capacity is down to 86% and is just over three years old.

Not particularly good, and nowhere near as good as my 5s was.

I don't know the battery capacities and average consumption for both 'Phones.

The 12 mini's OLED screen might be a bigger current hog, but the charging was done mainly by induction, and I think that played a part.

I'm sure I'll need a battery in a year or less.

I do charge by wire as often as possible, and use Optimized Battery Charging.

The level almost never falls below 50%, so that means it takes at least twice as long to accrue charge cycles, and the shorter the charging time, the less heat is generated.

Them's my data points.

I was going to mention heat. Heat is a big factor. I cannot charge my phone by induction in my car, because it gets too hot and shuts down.

I think I was trying to install an iOS update/upgrade while wireless charging, which failed because the iPhone overheated! But at least the phone was ok and I switched to a wired charger and the iOS update installed just fine then.

One last thing...

I happened to look at my 12 mini after posting, and noticed in

Settings > About > Battery > Service > Battery Health & Charging,

at the top of a page:

Important Battery Message
Your battery's health is significantly
degraded. An Apple Authorized Service
Provider can replace the battery to
restore full performance and capacity.

Oy.

When my 5s got to 82% is ran down very quickly and charge very quickly, tell tale signs of extremely low capacity.

Often it would quit without warning anywhere below 50%.

Anyway, $90 for a new battery isn't bad.

But I'll go until I actually get symptoms, although maybe it's running slower than new, and I don't notice because of the slipper Li-ion slope.

If you charge with the charger laying on a big ol heat sink... like a closed MacBook, it stays nice and cool.

I use an induction charger that has a built in fan. Works pretty well.
