Wires Anonymous: I admit, I like wired keyboards

I've been resetting my tech workstations at work and home.

I realize I have a nearly limitless keyboard options.

But I've settled on adding a WIRE to new Apple touchID keyboards.

Why not use the built-in bluetooth?

Apple has no easy way to connect to more than one computer via bluetooth.

But plugging the keyboard into a dock, we can use any one of three different laptops (home, work) and my wife's personal. And the touchID works on all.

Also, being plugged in keeps the keyboards charged.

No BT syncing issues, though I admit those were relatively rare (except at setup).

Anyway, just admitting that I like wires. And I plan to keep using them when they make sense!

yup, if Apple still made the extended aluminum USB keyboard, I'd be using it. Wireless keyboard doesn't do much for me. Wireless mouse (Logi) is definitely better, even though I resisted it for a long time.

Wired mice and keyboards are my normal setup. I often have to setup a workspace in a new location for a week or more. My kit is an apple cinema led display (23 and 27), extended apple mechanical keyboard, Logitech wired mouse, and anker usb powered hub. An identical setup is at home. And my laptop moves back and forth between both places. A online NAS drive takes care of having digital asset files and backup files available. Had too much trouble with Bluetooth latency , and constant repairing needed. My 2 cents

I prefer wireless, though there are tradeoffs on either side.

The one reason I have a wired keyboard handy is for rebooting and choosing a drive without using Startup Disk in Preferences.

I used to be able to get to the Startup Manager on a BT keyboard, but I've lost the secret or the touch.

Either way, it's much faster for me to just shift to a wired keyboard.

My go to mice are wireless. Using a Logitech M315 right now because I can put the transceiver in the same central USB dock as the wired keyboard, and it's useful for ANY machine that docks.

My pure bluetooth mice are the Logitech Anywhere series, where you can connect up to three different computers via bluetooth. You DO have to switch between settings, but the button is on the bottom of the mouse. I tend to write in a Sharpie on the mouse next to each of the three settings what machines are assigned to which button.

Sekker,

Wired keyboard all the way. Far more higher quality customizable options - especially if you prefer mechanical keyboards - and easier for issuing startup commands. If I used a mouse, I'd prefer wireless. However, I use a trackball. Technically, it doesn't matter if it's wireless or wired. I prefer wired since it means I don't have to think about recharging it and/or swapping out batteries.

You always need to have a wired keyboard and mouse available for the inevitable times when the wireless stuff gets goofy and won't work.

Free,

Absolutely. I have an old Apple Keyboard and mouse in storage just for that kind of situation. The last times I used them were when friends who'd switch to bluetooth devices had issues.

I have wired keyboards. I have KVMs so wired keyboards work better. I usually have a wired mouse on the KVM, but I use wireless Contour Design mice for most of what I do. The mouse software doesn't work with the KVM, AFAIK.

Absolutely prefer wired. If Apple had a wired trackpad I'd be using it now....

I'm the weirdo that prefers the keyboard and trackpad on my MacBook Air M2.

Or whichever Mac laptop I have in front of me. I'll plug into an external monitor, maybe even use a dock with a keyboard, but I've become pretty bad at using a mouse since I've been using a trackpad on an Apple laptop daily for 25 years.

My point, however, is that both the keyboard and trackpad are wired.

Why not just plug in a lightning cable and make that Apple trackpad wired?

My keyboard and Magic TrackPad are on my lap, not a desk, so cables are plugged in only until each are charged, then they're stowed.

Both my BT and wired keyboards are illuminated, and that drains the battery in about a week in the BT keyboard.

I think it has a light sensor to reduce backlighting if ambient light is high.

But I'm something of a night owl so the backlight gets a lot of use.

Both devices get turn off at the end of my 'day' so that helps.

I did use the older trackpads with 2xAAs, but as the cells aged, duty cycles became shorter, so I switched to the Magic Trackpad.

That made me think of the old IBM 3278 keyboards with their half inch-thick cable.
