I had heard that Tom was actually the smarter of the two, opposite of the character he played.

Tom, more liberal than his brother and largely responsible for the production of the show, brought in writers attuned to the thinking of the Baby Boom generation — among them Rob Reiner, Steve Martin, Pat Paulsen, and Mason Williams — and stretched the boundaries of taste at every turn.

He was very Unique! I loved his humor.

I recently watched a video of The Who performing on The Smothers Brothers show. After smashing their guitars, Tommy came out with an acoustic guitar, that Pete snatched from him and smashed. The exasperated look of Tommy is hilarious.

It's hard remembering how really out there that show was, especially in comparison to any other variety show. RIP, Tommy.

PS: I had totally forgotten that they had a (not far out there) half hour sitcom. For one season.

Got to see Tom Smothers in person twice.

The first time was in 1970 at the end of Hair at the Aquarius Theatre in Los Angeles. For the final song, some cast members would voluntarily stand nude on a semi-darkened stage. Although he wasn't in the cast, Tom Smothers was one of the producers. I suspect one reason he took on that role was so he could join the cast members on stage for this song. Sure enough, there he was a the performance I caught.

Decades later, the International Jugglers' Association was holding its annual festival in Las Vegas. That year, the festival hosted a yo-yo association. One of the afternoon events was a yo-yo competition. While he didn't compete, Tom Smothers sat by himself in the audience, fully entertained and enthralled. The look on his face as he sat and enjoyed the talents and skills of others was delightful.

Tom and Dick, two of my all-time favorites. I have all their comedy albums, which I've spent endless hours listening to.

Saw them in concert about 30 years ago, where I had a literal front-row seat. I thought I was in danger from Tom's yo-yo.
