Not that I've never received one before, but very suddenly I'm getting 3 or 4 credit card offers a day in the mail.
Does anyone know what sorts of things would trigger this?

I suffer from the same sensitivity that you do. A few nuggets of wisdom were shared with me and I'm "trying" to incorporate them into my life. First, remember that nobody can hurt your feelings unless you let them. You can always reject what is being forced on you emotionally.
Second, nothing changes unless you change it. If you don't want the behavior to be repeated then you need to take action. Otherwise the kid has learned that his behavior is the way to get things done, because everyone lets him get away with it.
In the meantime I sympathize because I've been there.

I would guess it's taken a hit in the last few months now that I've gone from one to 3 mortgages and probably had my score pulled a zillion times.

What other things can trigger it though? Opening a bank account? Applying for new utility service of some sort?
Spending more money each month?

I'm not surprised yours is high too Elmo. You seem like someone who would be pretty cautious in your dealings.

I get an envelope from Citibank about once a month marked "Last Chance". I usually shred them but I may start opening them and sending the return postage paid envelope back empty.

thanks-- doesn't really bother me that much-- if anything it gives me reassurance that at least some of my mail is getting to me. It just goes in the recycling.

Usually, it's a new phone/utility service that triggers it -- they do a credit check and sell your info before they finish setting up an account.

Sometimes, when you pay off a substantial portion of an old debt, it'll trigger their computers to flood you with offers.

Sometimes when you open a new consumer credit account or bank loan or if you consolidate debt you'll get flooded because it gets out that you're seeking credit.

Sometimes it's a matter of affiliations -- unions, credit unions, alumni organizations, etc. have joint ventures with some of the credit card companies where they get money for each signup or a percentage of your spending trickles down to them for a year or two after you get the card. These things are usually seasonal and as was mentioned, it is the beginning of the Spring fundraising season.

I'm leaning heavily towards it being my new loans because I'm also getting bombarded with offers from those companies that want to make my mortgage payments if I'm incapacitated.

I guess the fact that my dept has risen to ear-level makes me an attractive credit card user somehow. They can smell the fear . . .

But I've also opened a new bank account and switched phone providers.

get a shredder - a studly one that can handle 20 pages at once - shred all the offers.

people can order credit cards in your name very easily if they have just one of those offers.

Believe it or not, that may have *improved* your credit score--or at least given these companies the idea that you're a better candidate than you were before.
