.....especially with extreme cold weather.....batteries take longer to charge in the cold and you may have to charge more frequently.....lines of people at charging station just waiting for other EV cars to finish charging in extreme cold....


....NBC just had a story.....a taxi driver with EV says spending a lot of time waiting to charge (long lines)/charging in the extreme cold.......I'm not saying this is true or not true, just posting the story as it was just featured on NBC News (I couldn't find a link to the NBC News story).....



Drivers say electric vehicle batteries perform worse amid cold weather

....This brutal cold isn't just hard on our bodies, it can kill your car, or make it impossible to fire it up in the first place.

It's especially tough for folks with electric vehicles.

In weather like this, Jonathan Rosenberg from Edina says he needs to get behind the wheel of his Tesla with a plan.

"When you get really cold weather and some high winds, you definitely get some significant loss of range for sure," he said. "Maybe even over 25% I would say."

Rosenberg was charging his car at the Tesla supercharging station in St. Louis Park Tuesday.

"It definitely dies a lot faster," said Savanah LeFlore, who was also charging.

This happens to electric vehicles because the chemical reactions powering the battery slow down.

Keeping the heat on inside the car also takes up battery life.

A helpful feature on Teslas is that the car will tell drivers if there isn't enough battery life to reach the destination in the GPS.

Drivers say the cold can slow down the charging too, which costs money and time.

"I would say I'm spending $25-to-30 every other day [charging]," LeFlore said.

The cold can drain the battery on a regular car too.

Wilson Halley, the owner of Wilson's Auto World in Minneapolis, says they sold the most batteries they ever have in one day this weekend.

Halley says if you notice your car starting slow, it's a good time to get the battery replaced and a good opportunity for a tune-up.

"Never too late," he said. "It's a good way to get an evaluation. Give the car a once-over. See how everything's going."

Car emergency kits including jumper cables or a jumper pack are critical when it's this cold too......

Hybrids charge at a gas station. Works great. EV sales grew faster than the infrastructure. I’m sure the future will be better, but current state is bad.

All I ever really needed to know, I learned from watching Star Trek.

I saw the blurb on NBC. We'll be sticking with our 2015 Prius that charges as we drive and brake, no grid draw while charging. It's too soon for the masses to be in EV's.

Solid state batteries, solid electrolyte instead of the liquid or polymer gel electrolytes, are on the horizon so I've been told.

Even in the EV capital - California - finding a slot at a Tesla supercharger can be a crapshoot. As the network has grown, it's barely kept pace with the number of travelers. Didn't used to be the case that staying a little bit "overtime" at a charger came at a price. Back then (6-7 years ago) it was "go have some lunch, stretch your legs, see a movie, etc." Of course, charging was free then too. And, for those who still drive their early Model S, charging is still free - but the overtime penalty is not...

Oh god, why do we have another crap post about this same topic on the same day….did Newt not notice the previous one?

....I checked, the previous post was about Tesla Superchargers in Chicago not working.......not about the cold affecting electric vehicles in general (unless I missed another post).....

News flash...I've been driving an EV for four winters now...I have yet to have charging issues. People getting stuck had poor planning, that's all.

The reality is that if I got stuck somewhere very cold in an ICE car, odds are good that my battery might die trying to start my car, or the oil will solidify, or I will run out of gas idling while stuck on a highway.

I can sit in my EV all night with heat and run down the battery maybe 10%...and I could plug in the refrigerator to the V2L port and run that for days with another couple of percent.

Please stop posting FUD stories sponsored by Big Oil...

Jeez no reports of Diesel trucks gelling up in the cold . My cousin couldn't get his PU or Tractor started the the other day .

We spent 4 winters in MN with our EV and PHEV. They were our favorite winter cars, ever. They drive better with the extra weight, the Tesla can be remotely climate-controlled, and we did not have to go to gas stations in the cold to recharge.

I admit, tho, that we got here slowly. First, owned a Honda hybrid (non-PHEV). Then PHEV (Volt), then Tesla.

Now we are 100% EVs and do not regret it.

For christ’s sake, the majority of cars sold in Norway are EV’s. In big cities in the northern U.S., Teslas are as common as any other brand. You really think owning EV’s are not practical in the cold?! Please, stop spreading the FUD.

I'm holding off on posting my latest Bolt review since I still don't have adequate charging at my residence. Was scheduled for Monday and the electrician said it was too cold to work, rescheduled for Monday which looks to be warmer. I will say that charging and range has been rough with the cold and I've wasted more hours than I care to admit at charging stations this month. The 120V charging at home barely keeps the battery warmed in the sub zero temps and adds essentially no miles overnight. 240V will change that, so I'm withholding my judgement until I have that installed. I knew I needed it, I just didn't realize how long it would take to get it put in. Thought it would be a few days tops, not a few months.

When I bought our second Level 2 EVSE I had no idea it would take months for the electrician to do the install. I finally decided the half price electricity wasn’t worth the hassle given my prior unpermitted wiring that I did in my garage so I recharge overnight using 110v. Because I have a PHEV I only get a bit over 20 miles on the battery (that’s a full charge) in the coldest part of winter before the engine starts so I don’t worry about it.

I have a gas car (Truck) as well, but at 11mpg I'm trying to drive it only when I actually need the truck or when we need two cars due to scheduling. I would absolutely not be comfortable with an EV as my only car, or two EVs. At least one of them would need to be a hybrid. I'm looking at the new Ramcharger EV truck with the gas generator to replace the Superduty in a few years.

Correct, between getting quotes and getting one scheduled. Also took a few weeks to get initial contact from the Power Company(Xcel) who is subsidizing the charger to find out their requirements and prefered contractor.

Yep, non-Tesla Level 3 charging networks are currently a dog's breakfast.

Tell the network news teams that lines of Tesla's stuck trying to get charged are imaginary. My local CBS and FOX channels both had stories about it.

Second winter for me. Wife's garaged Crosstrek started hard this morning during first negative temp night for us. My un-garaged EV (one reason still married for 40 years, LOL) with help from the precondition ing,
AKA remote start, was defrosted, seats warm, steering wheel warm, and cabin getting warm.
This substitute for 'warming up the car' does not cause choking emissions and you just get in and go.
If I forget to precondition, that's OK, zero warm up needed, just get in and go. When I get home from work, I plug in at the lowest power level, 8AMPS, and still fully charged in the AM.
