OT: Ooooooh dang ! Glass Top Stove shattered !

Aaargh ! Teenager just called from home- the glass topped GE stove (which cost like $2K about 8 years ago) has 'shattered' after something 'fell on it by accident'.

Gaaah ! What now ? GE parts is saying the top and gasket alone is about $500. Homeowner's insurance is not an option- deductible is $1K.. Money is tight. Very tight. So tight I have to pick my words carefully- can't afford to buy vowels...

I think I'm just gonna go buy a hot plate, and cook like I did in college. At least the oven stil works (convection, which is totally awesome...)

Anyone have any cheapo ideas ? Aaargh...

What model?

If you are even slightly handy, the labor isn't tough on that repair, and parts can be found much less than GE direct.

cup-
Thanks.

It's a GE Profile, and I don't have the model number. And I AM reasonably handy, so I was planning on doing the work myself. Any suggestions on sources for the parts ?

If you can't tell, I'm stressed about this. Your response was the equivalent of a nice cold beer and a soft chair. Ahhhh.... Thanks !

depending upon your model and luck it looks like you could get the glass top for about half of $500.

Google Product Search/Ebay

You may be surprised on what you can find. I've found a whole lot that I didn't expect on there. Shipping may be an issue, but it may still save hundreds.

I have ordered from this place, they are very helpful.

start here: [www.repairclinic.com]

Also, eBay comes to mind as well for parts at a greatly reduced price.

Or buy a used one on Craigslist for dimes-on-the-dollar. People practically give away appliances.

Those glass top units are alot cheaper these days too.

You could probably pick one up for not much more than the repair of the old one....

You have a good local parts house ?

I find that once shipping is figured in that I can get parts locally as cheap or cheaper than online

Just because it's on the internet doesn't mean it's a good price. Check local too.

Wow! It must be a high-end model. I didn't know GE made a $2K stove.
My 12 yo Whirlpool glass top only cost $600ish and it's still going strong.

I wouldn't let a teenager accidentally drop "something" on it.

I've bought a number of used GE parts from them. Usually half the price of new.
