I just replaced the backup camera in my wife's car

10 year old car. She complained that image quality is bad and foggy. I agree...

When I took the car for an oil change last week, I asked the dealer for the cost

Part: $230 (+ tax)
Labor: $320 (+ tax)

I found the OEM part online with local pick up, $129 + tax.
They called the next day to say part is ready for pick up. Picked it up yesterday.

Installed today, 14 year old kid "helped", it was a fun bonding experience, took us about 90 min (it would have taken me 45 min but I let him do some of the work) and wife is thrilled with the new image quality. Night and Day.

I saved around $450 by doing this myself.

here is how the lens of the old camera looks like

Good story. Curious of type of car. I would think that would be a difficult replacement.

Volt. here is a video that show how you take the bumper off to get to the camera.

This guy use a different type of camera but I used OEM so no rewiring required, Just plug and play.

Now I am tempted to replace the camera in my car (7 year old)

Nice! I wonder if there was even a less expensive version if you could have found a part number on the lens itself.

Hurts like a bastid...

It's an interesting phase of a certain liquid that enables life on Earth and prevents those massive Wild fires you have in California.

That'll buff right out...

Seriously, do you have any idea what caused that, is it chipping, road salt exposure, natural aging of the plastic, etc?

I guess all of the above.

I travel a lot for work and when I rent new cars, I am amazed at how much better the image is.

I guess it's a combination of new optics (not scratched like mine) and better sensors. Even at night, some of these cars have better image than my old cars during daytime.

I am now seriously going to look into replacing the camera in the other car.
