G4 Won't Sleep After Replacing Optical Drive

This is a followup of sorts to this thread: [forums.macresource.com]

I was having problems getting Toast to run and after some troubleshooting (thanks to MacMagus for nailing the problem) determined that my DVD drive was failing. So I replaced the Pioneer 107D with an NEC AD-7170A: [www.tigerdirect.com]

The new drive works fine, no more problems running Toast. However, now my Mac won’t go to sleep. The monitor will, but the computer keeps going (fan runs, etc.). I then have to do a forced restart to get going again. Any ideas why? I’ve had issues with PCI cards causing sleep problems, but I didn’t expect an optical drive to do this.

You may ask, why did I replace the Pioneer with a non-native drive? Simple. I’m a dirty, rotten, cheapskate bargain hunter. The NEC was purchased in a bundle and after rebates, my cost will be nothing. Why pay $35 or so for something I can get for free? :-)

If it comes down to it, I guess I’ll get a Pioneer eventually, but first things first.

Why pay $35 or so for something I can get for free?

Because something that works properly for $35 is better than something that doesn't, for free?

I don't know that Brand X is causing your problem, and indeed it may not be.

I've got a Pioneer (supported) and a Samsung (not supported) in my MDD and it sleeps fine, better than I do.

Did you recheck your installation including any jumpers?

It is implicit that if something that’s free doesn’t do the job, then it’s better to pay for something that does. I believe I stated at the end of my post that such may ultimately be the course. Regardless, there’s minimal loss in trying. I was simply addressing an anticipated question by explaining my choice.

Anecdotes aside, a different jumper setting is something to try. The new drive did not label the jumper positions, so I chose to put the jumper on the same position as was done on the previous drive.

The sleep problem must certainly have something to do with the new drive, as that is the only change in configuration after which the problem began.

Unplug the drive and see if your problem goes away. It takes 10 seconds and then you will know if it caused the problem or not.

"...so I chose to put the jumper on the same position as was done on the previous drive."

Firstly, do what C(-)ris suggests: Unplug the DVR's ATA cable and see if sleep returns.
Usually sleep problems are related to crappy USB devices not playing well. Bad addressing might cause the problem IF there's another device connected to that ATA ribbon.

BTW:
Jumper positions are NOT universal between brands. If there was no diagram as to the positions for Master/Cable Select/Slave, then you need to type in the drive brand model number in a google search and come to a site where the diagram exists(NEC's site?).

If anybody is still following this…

Problem solved. It was indeed a jumper issue. I had the DVD set to slave because I had a HDD on the same bus as master. This worked with the Pioneer, but the NEC did not like that. So I had to reverse the settings for each device, and now all is well.
