He got greedy. If he’d only bought a few hundred shares instead of 48,000 shares, nobody would have been the wiser.

The guy was an idiot. Don’t know what he was thinking. With modern day information tracking and disclosure requirements, his purchases would have come to notice of regulators down the road at some point. I suspect a few beers were involved, and electronic stock trading.

Yes, the guy was greedy.
Someone in a wifi cafe overhearing her work at the next table could also have been greedy.

I don't know the full story, but it sounds like she didn't take enough care to keep corporate secrets... secret.

I don't blame the company for firing her unless her husband was also an employee and was also allowed to be privy to that information.

What was idiotic was doing this without discussing the idea with his wife. They could have either: 1) decided to do it and taken steps to make sure that they weren't caught; 2) She could have objected to doing it and then they may or may not have divorced over it; Unfortunately, he took 3) lie to the wife and the authorities and commit a criminal act. Moron!

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan
