WAIT!!!! So, i got to the part where I removed the drive but it's different than in the OWC video - I removed the 128GB SSD drive but the 1TB platter drive is still down in there. How do I remove it??? It doesn't show how to remove both drives in the OWC video
The Fusion Drive is NOT ONE module as I had been told. There are two separate drives……????? Do I have to remove the whole logic board to pull the platter drive out???

Do you know which original drive went bad - the spinny or the SSD? You don’t need either, with the 960GB SSD, but you can put the good (original) drive (if you know which is good) in the other space.
I dont know which drive went bad. I have removed the 128GB SSD but it looks like I have to remove the whole logic board to get the platter drive out too. Or can I keep it in but disconnect it somehow???

I AM following the iFxit instructions. And to remove both drives I have to pull the logic board out. I am wondering if I can keep the platter drive in there but disconnected so I dont have to pull the logic board out?

Didn't I make this clear in the other thread yesterday?
Fusion is a combination of SSD and HD.
Just replace both with a single LARGER SSD.
Yes, but the instructions I’m following from OWC and iFixit are different - the iFixit instructions say I have to remove the logic board to get both drives out. I thought the Fusion Drives would both come out without removing the logic board.....

It is a "concept" of fusing an SSD and a HD, Two Separate Physical Drives.
I understand that. If both drives in my mini are bad, both have to be removed correct? And then once removed I can pop in the 980GB SSD Robert sent me?

just put your “new” 960GB SSD drive in the bay you now have access to. Reassemble. Reboot from an external drive, or a USB installer, or one of the Mac recovery options. Then you’ll have access to Disk Utility, and you may be able to see the original drive you left in. (If it’s dead, it probably won’t appear in Disk Utility, but I think you should be able to leave the dead drive in place.) If it’s alive, and was configured as a Fusion Drive, you’ll probably have to erase it.
I presume you will want to install a fresh copy of the MacOSX on the new 960GB drive. Then you’ll have two separate drives, with a larger amount of total space (either 960+1000GB, or 960+128GB).
Alternately, you might be able to do a Fusion Drive again (a single logical volume) that appears like one, larger drive to the system and on your desktop. If so, do that before you fresh install MacOSX.
Do you have a separate backup of your original drive contents before the old setup died?
My backup is a Time Machine backup. SO, if I am understanding you correctly I can keep the 1TB spinner in and connected, connect the 980GB SSD where the 128GB SSD was, put it all back together and see if the 1TB Spinner is dead or alive. If dead I can just leave it in and use the 980GB SSD has the main drive? OR if the 1TB spinner drive IS dead, do I need to open it back up and disconnect it and leave it in? Here's a picture of what I believe are the connectors for each drive - so if the 1TB Spinner is truly dead, I would unplug it (the part I am holding in the picture) and just leave it in?

Did you ever try to boot from an external HD and see what Disk Utility says about the internal drives?
So, I got it all back together and booted it from a thumb drive - but now it's only trying to install macOS - I got to disk utility and it shows the NEW Micron drive and the thumb drive but after closing disk utility it asks where I want to install macOS and the only drive it gives as an option is the thumb drive which it say doesnt have enough space (of course). So, in disk utility it's NOT showing my spinner that I left in there plugged in. Only the new 980GB SSD I just put it......so what do I do next? Here are some photos
When I booted it up I held down OPTION but it didnt show me the various drives it jsut went straight to the installer.....?

I don't think there is a full OS on the thumb drive. I think it's only an installer (and recovery options). And it appears that you are booted from the thumb drive. That VendorCo is the thumb drive.
So, how do I get the thumb drive installer to install the OS on the new SSD?

OMG! I got to disk utility and reformatted the new SSD and rebooted and the new SSD showed up as an availble ddrive to install the oS and is installing as we speak!!!!

Yup so I got to DU again and reformatted the new SSD and rebooted and the new SSD showed up as an available drive to install the OS - and it's installing right now!!! YAY!!! So, since DU didnt show the spinner that I kept in the machine can I just leave it in or should I remove it?

So it’s installing El Captain on the new SSD. My last Time Machine backup was using High Sierra I think - or whichever os late 2012 minis could run? So, when I get the os installed on the new SSD do I need to update the OS before attempting a restore/migration from my TIme Machine backup?

speaking strictly as a tech, not from any experience inside that pertic'lur mini, I'd remove it.
But if that seems too daunting to go again, you're prolly OK.

As far as the update before TM, I would try without first and see if it flies.
If not, you know your way back and can update.
I suspect some apps won't work, but hopefully, with an update after the TM, all will be back to normal in 2012.

OK good to know. IT would have been awesome if the old spinner drive in there was actually recoverable…..and now that I think about it - when I put the mini back together the spinner SATA connection was a little loose…so I may open it back up and check to see if the SATA cable to the spinner is still connected or not. But, I dont think I want to remove it either way because I'd have to remove the whole logic board to do so.
QUESTION: It's installing El Capitan on the new SSD but right before my mini died it was using the latest version of High Sierra. So, do I need to update the OS before attempting to restore from my TIme Machine backup?

So far I haven't screwed anything up! The hardest part (opening the mini and swapping out the drive) is over. Now I just have to see if I can restore my Time Machine backup!
