I opened up an account here a few months ago when the rates were at 3.5% or so, they have since increased to 3.8% and now they have a temporary promotion where any new deposits made with earn 4.75% interest until Tax Day (april 15 2006), this includes any new accounts too.

Wow... Cool... I have a 4.5% CD through bankone... I have about $4000ish in ING that I'm going to withdrawal today and deposit friday or monday... do you think that is ok? or do you think that's in the fine print?

No, you can't withdraw and 're-deposit' funds to take advantage of the offer.

They will calculate total percentage gain based on the amount of funds present at the end of the term minus the amount at the beginning, so and withdrawal/deposits will only cancel out.

I thought of the very same thing having just deposited $1,200 or so a few days before the promotion began. So you just scrounge up what other reserves you may have and move them in for a while. Even their normal 3.8% beats the pants off my regular banks 'savings' account rates, which are something like .1%, it makes me sick.

I have an ING Direct account as well that I use to hold my emergency funds. The interest rate makes it a fairly nice place to park some cash that's easily accessible. The standard 3.8% is better than most of my local banks.

A person could drive himself crazy "shopping" for the best yield. I compared incognegro's pennbank rates for CDs with those offered by ING. The closest look like this:

12-month CD @ 4.35% APY
24-month CD @ 4.60% APY

No minimum.
