Why does Apple think 128GB or even 256GB is a lot of space? Same could be said about 8GB RAM?

There’s a commercial by Apple touting the iPhone 15 128GB as having a TON of space for all your photos, etc. Since when is that a ton of space? My photos take up 110GB not to mention apps, OS, etc. The same could be said about why they still keep base models of Macs at 256GB and 8GB RAM. I don't get it. I mean, do they just want to keep local storage to a minimum so you'll use the cloud? RAM and SSD drives are relatively cheap now. Why not start off with 512GB and 16GB RAM on base model Macs? Thank god they at least changed iPads and iPhones to start out with 128GB instead of the dreaded 64GB. I have an iPad that I use religiously for digital art and it only has 64GB and barely gets the job done. /rant

How? My iPhoto library is around 140GB, my music is around 108GB. Granted I may have a lot of both but not sure how 256 is enough for anyone. Even graphic designers? Film editors? Musicians?

It was years before my wife filled up a 64GB phone, and I can't remember if we got a 128GB or 256GB as the replacement, but either one will be fine for years as well.

Heck, I'm only using 111GB on my phone, but I use 7TB on my computer.

So, for the average consumer, 128GB and 256GB/8GB are probably fine. I know for my wife, both of those are totally fine.

And you don't have to buy those options, you can get more storage and RAM. It's not like Apple is saying one size fits all!

Of course, Apple charges an arm and a leg for upgrades, so I wish they'd cut those upgrade prices in half (or more!). That would make it a lot more reasonable and still leave a decent mark-up for Apple. There's no way I'm buying an 8TB computer from Apple new, so I had to wait until I could get decent deals on a used one.

It’s a takeoff on Bill Gates “640Kb should be enough for anybody” quote on the amount of RAM needed in a PC.

Jerry,

Bad comparison. You can't compare the storage necessary for a phone to the storage necessary for a computer. This is especially true if you regularly off-load from your phone photos and videos and keep a limited amount of music and videos (for watching) on the phone itself. Factor in streaming for music and video and a phone or tablet with 128GB to 256GB of storage is actually fine for the vast majority of people.

128GB to 256GB (or even 512GB) can be woefully inadequate for a computer be it a Mac, windows or Linux box. It all depends. My base minimum for a computer is 1TB of storage. Wouldn't purchase a machine with less storage than that for my office and I want a 2TB for my personal setup.

Yeah bad comparison. I guess I was leaning more towards their base configuration of Macs not iPhones. But even on an iPhone, 128GB for ME at least is not enough. I guess I tend to be a. hoarder of sorts LOL!

Maybe because most people don’t have music on their phone. Many people now use music streaming, especially the younger ones.

Those bottom configurations for Macs are pathetic, especially since now we are stuck with those configurations until we toss out the machine.

For phones, it varies. I have a 256GB iPhone 7, and it is pretty full. I will have to move some stuff off it. The last iPad I bought has 512GB. I keep a big chunk of music on it, almost all Apple Lossless from my CDs.

I bought my iMac second hand. It's so long in the tooth, but there's no way I can afford a new mac with 32GB of ram and 2TB of storage. I've got a laptop old enough that I can mirror it on the iMac, but new enough to keep updating, so I can use software that won't run on High Sierra when I need to. It's kind of wacky but it is buying me some time.

Anecdotal, yes, but my iPhone shows 50.4GB of 256GB used. My 2012 Mini shows 198.04GB available of 499.99GB.

I have 68G of music on my 'Phone.

Apple Music is only used at home on WiFi.

I don't know anyone who carries that much music on their phone.

Where computers are concerned I sure there are a lot of people out there who don't need 16/512 or can't afford it.

So it's nice to have some 'entry level' affordability.

Apple won't tell us, but I suspect there are a lot of sales of entry level configs, because not everyone is a power user.

They make 128 GB because they know people will fill it up and then have to pay for iCloud fees forever if users want to keep their photos/videos.
