It's a 6 hour drive from NYC, but Lake Placid is beautiful.

I will be driving from Northern California to just West of Austin Texas.
The great interactive map linked below allows you to just tap whatever location you like, it will give you the full set of details on the eclipse at that location.

The link below here is a forecast for cloud cover along the eclipse path.

We vacationed in Burlington, VT last year, so I am still on some subreddits for the area. They are going to have a bad time with the influx of people. I’ll stick to the 93% or so we are supposed to get here, as you say, IF it’s clear that day. I have to work anyway. I’ll go outside at the very least, or I’ll work from the deck all day.

I have friends making the trip to VT. I would be afraid of the gridlock, but I’m a weeny.

My daughter lives in Barre, VT where it will be 99%, however, her work is about 30 minutes (with NORMAL traffic) northwest of Barre. We will be on her work property with picnic lunches, etc to see 100% coverage. We are going to her house the day before to avoid 'some' of the traffic.

Just north of Torreón, Coahuila, where there will be the longest totality, is about 7 hours due west of me (McAllen, Tex.) but we plan to go to Eagle Pass which is 5 1/4 hours northwest of us. We will lose about 10 seconds of totality.

I checked out hotels in Eagle Pass and the rates were 10 times what they would be a week before and a week after the eclipse and there were few rooms available. My hope is that there won’t be too many travelers along our route but I plan an early start nonetheless.

It will be my one and only total eclipse since the next one, I believe, isn’t for about another 30 years or so. In the mid-70’s there was one near Winnipeg that I could have seen but that would have been about a 7 hour drive, too. I wish I had gone then.

I could drive 30-40 miles NW of here to get into the totality area but don't know if I want to risk the traffic.

I was in Prague many years ago when a total solar eclipse was predicted. A whole lot of us descended on the downtown area to watch. Minutes before the big event, clouds rolled in and it began to rain. Rained for the entire time of the eclipse, then the rain ended and the clouds cleared. It was the only daytime rain we had for the entire two week trip!

There is a HUGE difference between 93% and total eclipse.

Now that’s a real bummer. We expect clear skies in the Texas desert.

My plan is to establish a home base two hours out then drive in, with some flexibility to chase clear skies. Looks like about one to two hours outside of the totality band the hotel rates are pretty much normal.

We have a friend who owns a "ranchette" it the path of totality in the west Texas hill country. We're heading there starting Saturday as part of a two week road trip from California through Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and Utah, with many sights to see. The only worry is that we encounter cloudy skies, though that is much less likely than in the northeast. My BIL back east proposed that we watch from Lake Placid area but I wasn't too keen on the estimated 70% chance of cloud cover. I'd rather take my chances in the lone star state.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Oh, I know. Being a workday for both of us, it’s the best we can get.

Sounds like a plan. Barre was the only "vacation" we ever took when I was a kid, because we’d go to Rock of Ages to get granite for my dad's business and maybe have breakfast somewhere while we were there. I think I have pleasant memories… ?

I live 20 minutes south of Buffalo in prime viewing area. My 41 st anniversary is on the 9th. I told everyone I planned the eclipse for a gift for my wife.

Gonna pic-nic on the side of the road somewhere around Uvalde TX. If you're there, please pay your respects for the 2A Martyrs!

My son is a sophomore at University of Vermont in Burlington. The school is giving out eclipse glasses to all students and faculty/staff. There are a bunch of different events going on all over town, including at the airport.

My youngest is driving with a friend to Evansville, IN on Sunday to view the eclipse on Monday. Evidently the 85% totality we'll have in Atlanta is not enough. Their school sent out an e-mail yesterday that all absences on the 8th will be automatically excused.

Me? I'll be at work.
