Tanagers are here!

Geeked out birder. Guilty.

Every spring the Western Tanagers come through the Portland area on their way to the mountains where they breed. Thanks in no small part to DinerDave's post in which I was shamed into doing some long neglected yard work I was out in the back pulling weeds and happened to spot that signature bright yellow plumage flitting around in the Doug Fir next door.

Since I have few scruples I went and got my camera and my iPhone, then lured them over by playing their calls with the Merlin app. Come on, they don't mind. If you looked like that wouldn't you want to show off?

Nice bird. Missed seeing one twice in Arizona, fiddling with camera or looking at another bird in the moment, still on the "yet to see" list. These animations from Cornell are fun. [science.ebird.org]

We’re purple. Thanks for the link. Appropriately geeky.

Ooooooh! We only have the scarlet ones here, and only occasionally. I get pretty excited about bright birds - the indigo bunting probably the best example I’ve seen at home.

I misread the title and immediately thought of Abe Simpson not liking the look of those teenagers and walking back into the rest home. confused smiley

Mr. Lahey: A lot of people, don’t know how to drink. They drink against the grain of the liquor. And when you drink against the grain of the liquor? You lose.

Beautiful bird.

But did you know that they're really in the Cardinal family?

Now if I could only figure out why the hummers haven't showed up in my yard lately... I've got tons of stuff there for them to feed on...

We’ve got mostly Anna’s here. This time of year they start eating bugs.

This is probably the bird we saw in the desert (Anza-Borrego State Park) last week. Brilliant yellow with the reddish head.

Not sure where Recipe is, but his description of colorful birds is true of North Central Florida where I use to bird.

Rhode Island. We have a great variety of birds, because we have an Audubon bird management plan and kind of cater to a lot of them! We already have 3 baby eastern bluebirds who are about 2 weeks old this year (earliest ever).
