Look what the dog dragged in!

A dead mouse! And my S/O freaked out thinking we had failed to feed our lit' 12 lb terrier mutt properly. Since the pet food contamination calamity we have been cooking for the lit' guy. I just think he always has it in him to revert back to his inborn instinct. What do y'all think?

It never ceases to amaze me how during our walks, I'll all of a sudden notice our dog with something in its mouth. I stop and make her drop it, only do discover a dead and deteriorating mouse or mole or some other small varmint. She eats well, so it's not a matter of hunger. She can find them in the tallest grass or under leaves or wherever they happen to be decomposing. I guess it's the hound in her.

You misunderstood; that was a gift. From muttsie to dad and mom, with love. smiling smiley I seriously doubt the dog killed it. It was probably already dead, and he just brought it to you so you could see his prize. Or maybe he didn't want it in his yard and wanted to make sure you put it in the garbage, where it belonged.

Anyone who has or is considering a dog as a pet, should view PBS's Dogs That Changed The World [www.pbs.org]

The chapters 'Wolf To Dog' {Intro} and 'Hard-wired Behaviors' are especially informative.

Terriers are famously aggressive, driven to kill animals like rats and other vermin, which they'll furiously dig to catch. Although many of the most popular American Kennel Club dog breeds no longer work for a living, they still show signs of these ingrained behaviors.

So all pet food is contaminated now? We can't tell what's bad and what's good? Isn't there a list or something? We gotta cook for the dog? Is there one trusted brand?

My 9 yo son's little puppy Chihuahua "Izzy" has been digging up and killing moles in our back yard. She's 12 weeks old. In this case the Force of instincts are strong with this one.

(she's darn cute too. White fur, brown and black face, waggy tail, chubby little puppy tummy, sharp little puppy teeth... Looks like every boy's puppy from the Dick and Jane years.)

Hey, my cat brings LIVE ones into the house to play with. He thinks it'll just lay around like his other cat toys.

AlphaDog has it exactly right: your dog is trying to show you how happy he is with you. Praise and pet.

You were right the 'gift' was already dead. It was killed by a strayed calico my aunt's family has adopted.
