James Lileks to be put on regular, boring news stories

Always a good idea to turn your humorist into a straight news reporter.

Next, we'll turn the sports guy into a meteorologist. Duh.

Trouble is, Lileks' Star Tribune column isn't very good. Very frequently dull--the worst sin of a humorist. I've been reading him since his (and my) college days when he wrote for the U of M's Minnesota Daily, and his newspaper stuff is definitely tepid today.

On the other hand, his website-only content is gut-busting at times; maybe he should be writing for Conan, or the Onion, or something. I hope he finds some way to channel his unique talent in the right direction, but a regular column in a mainstream paper wasn't working.

“I have developed significant attachments to several members even though I wouldn't recognize them if I sat next to one on a park bench. I'm often tempted when in an airport to walk around, hollering "The Løpe", to see if anyone other than the Homeland Security people will acknowledge me. ” - The Løpe

“Human rights can only be assured among a virtuous people. The general government ... can never be in danger of degenerating into a monarchy, an oligarchy, an aristocracy, or any other despotic or oppressive form, so long as there shall remain any virtue in the body of the people.” — George Washington

“Public virtue cannot exist in a nation without private virtue, and public virtue is the only foundation of republics.” — John Adams

“Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters.” — Benjamin Franklin

"Every single terrible thing you see on Facebook — be it some sort of horrible right wing nonsense or a confusing and annoying product decision — is made in pursuit of growth. Every bit of damage that Meta has caused to the world has been either an act of ignorance or deliberate harm, at many times tweaking the product to make it harder or more annoying to use so that you will log onto Facebook or Instagram multiple times a day and spend as much time on there as possible." Actually, quite a few people outside of his market are familiar with James Lileks. He's responsible for The Gallery of Regrettable Food, for pete's sake!

I find his blog ("I've got the cutest daughter, let me tell you ALL ABOUT HER EVERY MOVE") boring and his politics at best misguided, but let me tell you whut: that guy can write well, and can be hilariously gifted when he's not talking about himself.

I am saddened that a fellow with that much talent is being shuffled to regular news, but I think he (not surprisingly) and his supporters have missed the clue: THEY WANT HIM TO QUIT.

The reason is twofold:
1. A humour columnist in a newspaper is akin to being a blacksmith at the mall.
2. His newspaper "humour" column just wasn't very good, and hasn't been for quite a few years now.

I hope somebody manages to get this communicated to him before they fire him outright, so he at least gets a nice severance package. Ultimately, this change will probably do him good -- for starters, it will get him more in touch with the real world where real people live instead of pundit-land, where people believe in magical fantasies.

Good luck to him.

I don't really know what I am talking about, but won't he get a better package if he is fired than if he quits? Because I think when you quit you get nada, but if someone with his years at the company gets fired he will probably get fabulous parting gifts. Yes?

Yeah, $tevie, he works as a writer in newspaperland, a dying medium where the golden parachutes handed out daily nearly outnumber the points on a pica pole! [/sarcasm] ;)

>1. A humour columnist in a newspaper is akin to being a blacksmith at the mall.

LOL. This from a guy who always wanted his own humor column.

But seriously, Lileks is a good writer.
