WTF? Series 6 can't pair with iPhone 6S?

I just got a series 6 watch. Apple Support says it will pair with my trusty old 6S, but when I try to pair them, I get "iPhone Out of Date" in the watch app. What gives?

15.8.2. Says it's up to date.

Sounds like there's a problem with the 'Phone or the Watch, and not Apple, as your 'Phone and Watch should be compatible.

Have you tried an On/Off with your 'Phone?

Or if that doesn't work, a forced restart?

The Watch isn't paired, so I don't know if an On/Off will do anything for it.

Your watch *should* pair with your phone, up to watchOS 9 and iOS 15.

Did you get the Apple Watch with watchOS 10 on it?

(You can go to Settings > General > About on the watch to check the version of watchOS on it.)

The Apple support document explicitly says the Series 6 Watch is compatible with the iphone 6S. Tried on/off on the phone and watch. No joy.

Yeah I got that, hence my remark about 'should be compatible'.

That they currently are not, and On/Off of no help, maybe it's time try a forced Restart, or backup and reinstall iOS.

I agree, according to Apple, it should. I can't check the watch os without it being paired. The watch gives a message about how to update the phone to iOS 17, so it seems likely the watch is at 10.

Guess I'll have to bite the bullet and get a later phone, but I really don't like the bigger phones.

Where'd you get the watch from? Apple's not selling that model anymore.

If you got it from a friend or family, ask them if they were keeping up the OS. If they've been updating regularly or automatically, then yep, that's the reason.

...The current iPhone SE is only marginally bigger than the 6s.

6s:
[support.apple.com]
Height: 5.44 inches (138.3 mm)
Width: 2.64 inches (67.1 mm)

SE

Height: 5.45 inches
Width: 2.65 inches

The blood oxygen feature was the main reason for getting the watch, but the 2022 SE doesn't have it. Otherwise, the SE would have been ideal.
