2015 MB Air Won't Start

Number 2 Son's family has a 13" 2015 MB Air with a declining battery. This weekend it refused to start, and the Magsafe plug showed no color, neither green nor orange. Thinking the charger might be at fault, grandson bought a replacement charger from Amazon, which also showed nothing.

I brought the Air home, and used the charger from my 11.6" 2015 MB Air. This one shows green. Pressing the Start key does nothing. Why mine shows green and not the other two I have no idea.

I assume the battery is completely dead. But I thought a Mac with a dead battery would still run with the charger connected. Not true? Worth taking to Apple for a new battery?

FWIW, this is model A1466. Thoughts/suggestions welcome.

Not related, but interesting, I have an old 15" MBP, plugged it into charger and would not start. It was plugged into a 60W charger. Changed to the 85W charger and all was fine..

as I remember, like my 2013, pretty easy to self batt.
try holding down the start key for 10 secs.
if not, try a SMC reset.

I had the same issues with a 2014. A new battery from OWC fixed it.

EDIT: But I thought a Mac with a dead battery would still run with the charger connected. Not true?

I thought so too but apparently that 2014 refused to boot up without a good battery. It's been about 3 years since that repair and I am not sure I remember all the details, but anyway, I hope you fix yours too.

Try leaving it plugged in overnight and see if there is ANYTHING left for the battery to charge.

Did that, and still unable to boot up. Charger light remained green all night. Tried SMC reset; didn't do anything.

Is there any way to tell whether a battery replacement would bring this computer back to life, or whether there is something else wrong that would obviate that?

Now that I think about my 2014 MBA, I think I was able to boot it after I disconnected the battery. Maybe I reconnected the battery back, I am not sure. Anyway, once it was up, the System profiled or Coconut battery showed a dead battery.

Do you have the right tools (Pentalobe? TriLobe? Torx?) to open it and take a look inside? try to boot it without a battery?

Pull the battery. Not hard with the right screwdriver – like tools, if I recall correctly.

Thinking about it. Talked to a Support guy at OWC—he said that in his experience, laptops always run on a power supply even if the battery were dead. So it is likely there is some other problem. In that case, not sure pulling the battery would tell me anything. . .
