I'll test it to make sure it works but shortly after that I hope to drain the oil and put it in storage for a very long time.

There are some really dedicated obsessive people who have written whole break-in routines/cookbooks that they swear will allow your new generator to live a long healthy well-lived life.

I have a "healthy" skepticism of that sort of thing from the world of cars. I'm happy to go the extra mile but I'd like to proof that I'm not performing greasemonkey voodoo. Main point - sooo many car guys are sooo sure that its much better to do more frequent oil changes. Lots of suspicions of big companies and no proof.

I'm honestly having a hard time coming up with something to use as a load. Maybe I need to borrow an electric heater from a neighbor.

Shut off the Main circuit breaker at your electrical box, cutting off outside power. Then plug the generator into any wall circuit, inside or outside. That will feed juice back to the electric box and out again to all outlets on that leg (half the house).

While this will technically work and will require what's commonly called a "suicide cable", connecting a generator to your house wiring without using a "transfer switch" or a similar safety interlock is dangerous and is illegal in many areas.
