Bolt Update: First Maintenance Item

Quick update on the Bolt. Up to 22k miles thus far on it myself, and 43k miles and 6 years old on the vehicle itself. Average is 3.2 Mi/KWh over the 22k miles. I drive the majority of my miles at 70-75mpg on the interstate so I'm not going to ever see a good rating there. Anyway...

The passenger side brake seized up due to rust and warped the rotor. Both the front and the back of the rotors are grooved and the pads on both sides have chunks missing/flaking. All are GM parts so I am going to assume they are the factory originals with 43k on them. There was virtually no pad depth wear, they were nearly the same height as new. Car has been in Wisconsin it's entire life. Rust is typical here and it was driven in the snow all winter.

I'm not entirely sure if the caliper seized or if the pads just got stuck in the bracket but since the calipers are only $38 each. I'm doing both sides along with the brake pads and rotors. Total out the door for the repairs is $230 for the parts. I'm installing myself so no labor, there isn't anything special about the EV brakes. In fact they are the same as the Chevy Cruze part numbers for similar years.

In the same period of time I've spent about $3k in repairs and $2k in gas on my 2019 Superduty on around 9k miles driven and I just found out at the last oil change that it needs a u-joint on the front axle so that will be another $350-$400 that needs to be done before winter. Once that Dodge Ramcharger comes out, I'll probably switch over to one of those. Just can't do a full EV with a truck, has to be a hybrid.

Same thing happened to my wife’s Volt. She didn’t drive it much during COVID. It took the local dealer 4 tries to fix it. We sold it and bought a Model 3. My Volt is still going strong though.

If you haven't already, and you may have, check the caliper pistons to see they're not sticking because of rust or build up of some nature.

The Bolt EV is an excellent value as a used EV or starter EV. It's actually just a plain good EV. We have had two, and probably still would if CHP did not have such a strict stance on 2WD vehicles and chains in snow.

The only did is that the Bolt is slow when it comes to DC fast charging. It sounds really slow at 53kw, compared to my Ioniq 5, which can get up to 230kw. But the reality is that most DC fast chargers end up running about 110-130kw. If you're charging at home or work, then it's a non-issue.

Do note that the early Bolts 2017-19 do not all include DC fast charging. The ones that excluded that option are often the cheapest listed used Bolts.

“The passenger side brake seized up due to rust and warped the rotor.”

As in, the brake wouldn’t release so the tire was skidding because the caliper failed to move?

I’m used to having rust fly out from the wheels when I have to brake hard in our Volt. But they have never seized up.

Correct, either the pad wouldn't release and was stuck pressing against the rotor or the caliper wouldn't retract and was pushing the pad against the rotor. The tire wasn't skidding but the rotor was burning hot and smoking from the friction of the dragging pad. I'm replacing calipers and rotors and pads just to be safe. The caliper did move in and out but no guarantee that it doesn't randomly seize due to rust. I'd rather just replace everything to be on the safe side and reduce downtime. I spend more in gas if I have to drive the truck back and forth for 2 days than both calipers cost.
