“Slept like a light bulb”

After a suite-mate announced this phrase one morning many years ago, my ear has been tuned to notice instances where two expressions get mashed together, usually unwittingly.

Just noticed “win in a cakewalk”, which is a mashup of “win in a walk”; an old horse racing expression, and describing some activity as a “cakewalk”; as easy (a pre-Civil War dance originally performed by slaves on plantation grounds*).

*Also the origin of the expression that something good “takes the cake”.

Not a spoonerism.

More like mixed metaphors.

I knew a guy who deliberately mixed the traditional metaphors/homilies/whatever, and it was annoying, mainly because they were basically nonsensical.

Then there are people who just don't get it right, like 'happy as a pig in filthy mud.

One my hear it a lot as a TV trope spoken by an attractive foreign woman trying to use American idioms.

What is the "light bulb" metaphor supposed to be?

“I could care less”

“The importance of <something> cannot be underestimated”.

Other semi-related ear-irritants include “Take a pitcher with your camera”.

He’d mashed up “out like a light” with “slept like a log”.

I hear some of them way too often on crime TV: "played a factor" is one that really bugs me. Something can play role, or be a factor, but nothing can "play a factor".

I think the mashup might be "Make like a tree, and beat it!"

I've been a Jim Jarmusch fan since the get go, and a favorite is Down by Law. In it, Roberto Benigni was cast without really speaking English and made many malapropisms, mixed metaphors, etc. throughout. Recommended.
