Forum: The Reports Of My Death Are Greatly Exaggerated
Posted by: Markintosh
Date: August 22, 2024 09:37AM
I have been seeing a lot of posts lately claiming that the forum is not available on _______ browser under ______ OS. While I am sure that there are people experiencing these troubles, I am not.

I have no problem accessing the forum on my MacBook, iPhone or iPad. All three go to the site and work with no complaints. Looking at Safari right now, there is a lock in the URL bar. Clicking the lock shows that there is a valid certificate until sometime next year.

I keep the my operating systems (and therefore Safari) up to date, always. There's a number of people here that seem to have a basic distrust of "the man" and won't update to the latest OS or browser version for various reasons.

I am not running the latest equipment. My MacBook is four years old, as is my phone. My iPad is coming up on five years.

I'm not trying to be a contrarian here, I am just reporting my experience.

Also, yes, the quote used in the title is no longer a factual quote that can be attributed to Twain, but it is now the commonly accepted use.

MArk,

Not sure why you're bringing up an issue of running an older OS or flavor of Safari. This particualr problem isn't an issue caused by running older software. I couldn't view the forum in safari on my iPad Mini 6 or my iPhone 14 Pro. Both have the latest flavor of their respective OSs and Safari.

I'm running 10.13.6 High Sierra because I have to. My Macbook Pro is 13-years old and I can't afford to upgrade, therefore I'm using an outdated OS and internet browsers. Wish I wasn't, but its my reality.

Geez would ya lay off Robert? Anytime I post something you are there busting my chops. Please knock that off.

My post is a positive post just stating that things are working on all devices. I am leaving it up to others to ask themselves questions about what they might be doing differently. I am not judging you, nor anyone else.

I tried to access the forum on my iPhone last night using the most recent Firefox. No go. Same when I tried to get there from an M1 Studio, no go with either current DuckDuckGo or Firefox.

I have to change a setting in Firefox on whatever Mac or MacOS I use to get the forum to load.

My life goes smoothly and in regular intervals

I don't know the ins and outs of the tech side of things. I hope that it all gets smoothed out. What I do know is that this certificate incident shows people care deeply about this community. I recognize that I sometimes take this place for granted. I don't think I say thanks enough to the sponsors and other people that keep the lights going on around here. Thanks all.

Yes, I also get the error on Firefox. Truth be told, there's maybe one or two times a year where Safari will not work on a site, then I will use Chrome momentarily.

Firefox is for use only when I run out of free plays on the USA Today crossword on Safari and Chrome.

FWIW the forum was working in Safari on my Sonoma 14.6.1 M1 MBPro until a day or 2 ago. Tried to add the certificate but is was identified as revoked. Sure, it was listed as "good" thru Jan 2025 but Safari said "revoked".

And this morning with no changes, it's working again in Safari. Seemingly random.

Working in Firefox on my Mac this AM too, we'll see about Firefox on my PC later today but it hasn't worked there in weeks.

I have an iMac running HS 10.13.6 and same issue. it only stopped working on this setup yesterday, so I didn't miss anything.

thanks, OWC!!!

Markintosh,

Not a chance. To me, your post wasn't particularly positive. Rather, the vast majority of it came across as knocking members who use older versions of the OS and browsers. That is just unnecessary. All you had to say was that you're not having issues accessing the forum on your particular combinaiton of hardware and software.

As I noted in previous threads, this wasn't a problem to be fixed on the user end. OWC needed to update the certificate due to DigiCert's previous error and it looks like that happened yesterday afternoon with a new cert.

This is why I like to do my surfing on my Mac Studio with three 32" 4k screens.

How else can I keep Safari, Chrome, and Firefox running with (a quick count...) 7 windows and 100+ tabs?

All my devices/browsers work again and I have re-enabled the checking in FireFox.

I still wonder why there was a staggered impact on users, I didn't experience it until a few weeks after others started reporting it.

You make me feel like a slacker. I’ve only got two 32” 4k monitors hooked to my Studio.

Could someone put a reminder on their calender for the next certificate expiration date and send out a reminder beforehand?

Probably not necessary. The problem was due to a rare mistake by the certificate authority, not the expiration of the certificate.

I am so glad this saga is over.

I was completely unaffected except for the fact that people would not talk about anything else. I've never seen an issue get so many threads...

...I'll just mention all is well on one box where both Safari and Firefox failed to engage, while Brave soldiered on.

It's good on this one, so I'll assume as I use other kit, it's all sorted.
