Note this model was introduced in 2021, DISCONTINUED May of '24; there's a 10th gen introduced in 2022, both may be superseded by announcement next Monday or next Spring 2025... Still, if you need a new iPad this seems like a decent deal.

*note that iPadOS and its loaded data nowadays take up almost 20GB so you'll only have something like 40GB usable space even with nothing extra loaded on it.

Hmmm...could this be time to finally retire my Kindle Fire HD8 tablet? The Fire does what I need it to do, allow me to download Kindle books from the library and play occasional games. It's only 32GB and I haven't felt crippled by it, so this 64GB iPad almost seems like a no-brainer. A few questions come to mind.

1. Will I be able to download and read Kindle books on it?
2. Can I use a plain old stylus with it or do I need an Apple pencil?
3. Will it be a pita to use in any kind of sunlight?

Any other major pros or cons to consider? Thanks.

There is a Kindle App so you should be able to read your books.
Not sure about the other 2 questions. I think e-Ink is what you want for reading in sunlight, so this is not e-Ink.

Funny. I have the same Kindle Fire HD8 and thought the same thing. I only read books and watch the occasional Prime Video show on mine. It does all I need it to do, so I don't see a need to spend the money. Plus, I like the size of the Kindle Fire over this larger sized iPad.

There is rumor afoot that there will be an iPad mini 6 announcement next week, so I'm hoping for that.

I still have a 2017 iPP in good stead, or I'd scoop up this iPad 9.

Please let this be so, same form factor, just a newer CPU and RAM. I have a case for a mini I had for work but I switched jobs and had to send that mini back, and I haven't been able to justify buying a replacement device...

A case for purchasing a mini or a case that needs a mini in it.

If it's the latter, you're probably out of luck.

I've had three minis and no subsequent mini could use the previous mini's case.

Apple changed either one dimension juuuuust enough the case wouldn't fit, and/or button locations, so the case didn't fit.

I assume though there could be perfectly acceptable reasons Apple changes just one dimension, I don't believe there is one.

That's to say they do it deliberately so that last year's case won't fit, even if they didn't have to.

Not analogous, but that reminds me of the wired Apple Aluminum Keyboards that came with an extension cable that could only be used with those keyboards.

Why?
