Happy Birthday Mr. President, a century in the making

Former President Jimmy Carter Turns 100 today, making him the first president to reach that milestone. Regardless of one's feelings about his term in office, he became the model for post-presidency.

Age has not been kind to him, but he still displays a pragmatic optimism that all should embrace.

"Those who cannot accept the past are condemned to revise it." -- Geo. Mathias

The German word for contraceptive is “Schwangerschaftsverhütungsmittel”. By the time you finished saying that, it’s too late

Scary to think that a certain recent single term former president could try to run for 5-6 more time in the future.

Happy Birthday Mr. President!

Most ineffective president in the modern era. Good guy but I'm not sure he ever solved anything and in fact made a lot of things worse. Too bad.

Worst thing he did was pave the way for Reagan!
But he really was too good a man, too good a person, to be an effective president.

“Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented." - Eli Weisel

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." - Theodore Roosevelt (1918)

"I don’t want to see religious bigotry in any form. It would disturb me if there was a wedding between the religious fundamentalists and the political right. The hard right has no interest in religion except to manipulate it." - Billy Graham 1981

"Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise" - Barry Goldwater

He’s been quoted as saying that he wants to live long enough to cast his vote in the upcoming presidential election (for Harris).

Via grandson via son. Unlikely that his verbal skills are up to that task at this point, but it's a nice thought.

You gotta ask yourself, is it better to be ineffective... or detrimental (like a certain best President since Abe Lincoln who shall go unnamed.)

He is the first President I remember. I worked on his campaign when I was 5, stuffing envelopes for mailings. I've also had the pleasure of meeting him a few times. He spoke annually at Emory University when I was an undergraduate there. He also taught one lecture in one of my Chemistry classes and gave a lecture about the Camp David Accords in my Modern History of the Middle East class, taught by the first director of the Carter Center.

A few years ago, my wife and I spent the morning of our anniversary waking up at 4:30am (we were staying in nearby Americus, GA) to go get in line for his Sunday School service at his church in Plains. He taught a nice class, and we got to take pictures with him and Rosalynn.

Politics aside, he is a good man who walks the walk about his faith and helping society. He has done more good for the world since he left office, from Habitat for Humanity to wiping out guinea worm and the other initiatives of the Carter Center.

Yes, and many others like him have been scorned by their contemporaries.

I cannot talk about his effectiveness here (I "joined" during RR), but I know that he generally increased the love for the US in the world, totally opposite from W.
