I’d like to start using Usenet again but it has been many years. Does Spectrum have a Usenet server? What client should I use for binaries? I’m specifically interested in alt.binaries.e-book.magazines to get backups of my magazine subscriptions.

I bought a fixed amount of data 15 or 20 years ago instead of a monthly plan.

This is the best way to go if your usage is occasional.

I haven't used it in years.

I have no idea what sort of client would work now.

I use Newshosting as my usenet provider. They have an app that actually runs on the Mac. I’ve only used the app a few times, so I can’t comment on how good it is. I use an ancient program called MT Newswatcher, running on a Snow Leopard VM on Parallels. I’ve been using it since the mid-90s, and I’m used to how it works. I use a separate program to download files via NZBs. I think it’s called NZBVortex.

I used to have Astraweb, but they had issues several years ago which caused me to change to Newshosting. They have a pretty long retention… some binary groups go back 10 years or more.

I don’t think Spectrum does Usenet anymore. When they were Roadrunner (in my area), they discontinued free Usenet groups about 10-15 years ago.

Usenet. Now that's a name I've not heard in a long time.

There was a thing called "Google groups" that was very similar, in fact I think it copied some of the usenet groups since I was able to find the same posts in both places. But I think they shut it down many years ago.

Yeah, I was hoping the author would do one last update lifting the number of headers it can download at a time. But alas, he never did. He actually got hired by Apple. I wonder if he’s still there.

Nah, the headers don’t take up much space. The limit right now is 100,000. Unison would download as many unread headers in a group that were unread and it never filled the hard drive… not even close.

Mozilla Thunderbird used to have the ability to subscribe to Usenet newsgroups. I haven't use Tbird in years, though, so it may have fallen by the wayside.

Only binary downloaders.

If all you want to do is download free magazines, that’s probably good enough. Look into SabNZB.

As mentioned above, Newshosting has a newsreader that runs on the latest OS, but I’m pretty sure it only works with their servers. I’m still happy with MT Newswatcher in a VM. I was never a fan of Unison.
