Unidentified Drone Swarm over US Military Base Sparks Alarm

Mysterious drones have been spotted flying around one of the U.S.'s most sensitive military areas, leaving defense officials and local authorities stumped as to who is behind the unknown uncrewed aerial vehicles zipping across the sky around a major U.S. air base.

U.S. military personnel reported drones appearing in restricted airspace over Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia, shortly after sunset during a period of more than two weeks, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The drones appeared in December last year, according to the report, pulling in officials across the Pentagon, FBI and the Defense Department's specialized office for investigating unidentified aerial phenomena.

Officials haven't determined if the drones belong to enthusiasts or are operated by countries such as Russia or China, according to the report. U.S. officials are not convinced that hobbyists were behind the controls, with the drones flying in a pattern and using a frequency band not associated with easily bought, commercial drones, The Journal reported.

The Pentagon referred queries to the U.S. Air Force and Langley, which Newsweek contacted via email for comment.

If the were happening that frequently why haven't they captured one, locate the transmitter controlling them, and also follow them home as they leave.

I suspect that anti-drone drones are on the horizon.

They've tried. Running into a lot of regulatory issues (which seems unbelievable given the context here).

Surface to air.

Federal law prohibits the military from shooting down drones near military bases in the U.S. unless they pose an imminent threat. Aerial snooping doesn’t qualify, though some lawmakers hope to give the military greater leeway.

The first drone arrived shortly. Kelly, a career fighter pilot, estimated it was roughly 20 feet long and flying at more than 100 miles an hour, at an altitude of roughly 3,000 to 4,000 feet. Other drones followed, one by one, sounding in the distance like a parade of lawn mowers.

How can anyone launch a dozen or more 20' drones without being detected?

Drones are an emerging threat. There’s tons of YT vids showing the Ukrainians using them on the battlefield to great effect. 20 ft long and using unknown frequencies? Shoot them down.

DARPA needs to work on EMP "guns", and when they fall on a military base, they just dunno smiley

"The conclusion is thus inescapable that the history, concept, and wording of the second amendment to the Constitution of the United States, as well as its interpretation by every major commentator and court in the first half-century after its ratification, indicates that what is protected is an individual right of a private citizen to own and carry firearms in a peaceful manner." You mean the previous regime....Trump was wholly bought and paid for by the Chinese and Ruskies.

Oh, I forgot, Trump never lost….so I guess that would make him the ‘current’ regime.

Here’s another story on the same incident, which occurred in December, 2023. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/mystery-drones-swarmed-a-u-s-military-base-for-17-days-the-pentagon-is-stumped/ar-AA1saqAu

The military needs a way to knock these drones out of the sky quickly without collateral damage. Lasers?

Exactly.

There is the matter of the failing/falling/exploding drone possibly causing collateral damage.

Because the props on these 'toy' drones, by comparison aren't that strong.

The eagles grab the props stopping them immediately.

Their feet and talons are tough and fairly resistant to the props, though there was talk of developing shin guards to to help protect them.

These birds were trained to capture and ground consumer drones, not these much bigger drones moving at 100mph.

But, like risking sacrificing dogs for the safety of police officers, perhaps an eagle could intercept and damage a prop of a larger drone.

About the same time as the Eagle Scout programs, there were some EMP weapons being tested.

These were much smaller than would probably be needed now.

What we need are Peregrine drone hunters – high speed drone armed with lasers, EMP weapons, nets, prop fouling gear, etc to intercept and ground suspect drones.

But yeah, 'till then let's blast 'em all outta the sky and fk all where debris rains.
