That bodes well for the base M4 Mac Mini having more than 8GB.

I think there is a legitimate argument that Apple has orphaned the users of the 27" 5k iMac and iMac Pro. I was one of them - loved my Intel 5k iMac. This Apple Studio setup with external monitor and peripherals is not nearly as seamless.

Yes. A truly zero-thought update on Apple's part.

Watching the iMac video.

The M4 iMac is about 2x as fast as the M1 iMac.

Comes in different colors.

And peripherals are USBC.

Base configuration includes 16GB RAM.

So - better value than before. But that's really all.

As much as I love the 27" iMac 5K - I have one at home and just had to retire one due to its screen dying - I - I can see why Apple isn't producing an Apple Silicon version. It would cannibalize sales of the Mini, Studio and Studio Display. That and I think it behooves many people that the machine needs to be replaced if the built-in display goes kablooey. My recent experience with my office's 2019 iMac 27" 5K falls into that category.

If the my office's Mac had been an intel mini or tower or an M series Mini or studio, I'd replace the display and go back to work. Since it's an iMac that wasn't a viable solution. That's why I ended up buying a new display (which I needed one way or the other) and a new Mac to use with it. To have to do that annoyed me to no end.

I was hoping when need arose to replace my 2015 27" iMac with another 27" iMac. Doesn't look like that's going to be possible.

I find the absence of a 30-32" iMac conspicuous.

The only reason I can think of is that the monitors in iMacs tend to last far longer than the iMac motherboards. There are a TON of old iMacs in the recycling center here. If those monitors were external, they would still be in use.

Indeed, once you hit 'retina' resolution, arguably monitors would have an unlimited life span. That is, updates over 'retina' monitors are really relatively modest for office work at least.

The new iMac supports 2 6k monitors in addition to the built in monitor. I'm hoping that the Mini will support 3 without using displaylink (which IMO sucks).
