Ok so why base options still start at 256GB? Why not 512GB?

Maybe it’s because I tend to keep A LOT of stuff but with software, games, files, so much larger file - wise nowadays 256GB drives seem like 8GB RAM. It’d be nice to have a base Mac start at 512GB/16GB.

Yah, it's cheap. Doesn't bother me so much for desktops.

256gb is plenty for the light user that doesn't create - it's good to have a minimal option - of course, for apple it's just an excuse for charging BIG BUCKS for upgrades, but lots of people buy the bottom of the line and are perfectly happy with what they have as it works for them.

BIG difference from the old iMacs that came with 32mb of ram standard that was simply not enough for doing anything in those days.

You pay for cloud storage so you don't need local storage.

I was about to add that - that everything is so much in the cloud!

At least there is a reasonable way to add storage. Ram is the bigger concern since you’re stuck.

I have a fleet of M1 128GB/8GB models. They are fine for everyday basic use including Canva, social media, email, web browsing, Office apps, etc. when combined with Google Drive/One Drive for additional storage.
