Need HD for PB G4

PowerBook G4 1.33 1.25GB ram

Some really loud screeching coming from the drive, along with it not booting, pretty much suggests that the HD is dead.

Is it worth replacing it with a 7200rpm model? I use it for Photoshop on location. I know the new MBP laptops are much faster, but for now this G4 gets the job done. Seems like a pretty easy DIY job

Worth it $120 for an 80GB 7200 RPM drive? Or no real differece over the 5400 RPM model for an older PB G4 and save $50.

Thanks
Jon

i'd go with a 5400. the speed difference between it and a 7200 isn't that great.

Are you are that 160GB laptop drives often sell for less than that now?

CircuitCity has a 120 GB Seagate for $109 after $20 instant rebate:

Get it locally for instant gratification. 5400 rpm; 8 MB cache. ATA-100 should work for PowerBook G4...

Magus, IIRC, the PATA drives only work with the Intelbooks, not PBs or earlier models. i think what he would need is a SATA.

You have it backwards. SATA was introduced to Mac laptops with the Intels.

The aluminum G4 1.33 came standard with a 4200rpm ATA100 drive.

Ordered a 100GB 7200 Seagate from OWC.

Arrives later this week, BUT, LOW AND BEHOLD,

at this moment the laptop starts up fine..........hmmmm, no weird noises, loud screeching.

Hmmm, weird.
